I am quite happy to call the modern world "home."
I just don't want to spend all my time at home...
I'm gonna steal this one.... its perfect.

The modern world we live in is ruled, for the most part, by greedy, selfish people who are sometimes even complete idiots. I don't think the worlds got much longer before it falls apart, and we'll be left to clean it up. That's why I spend a lot of time thinking about what we'll be doing in 10, 20, a hundred years.

I'm going to beat others to the punch in saying that greedy, selfish people have been in power for a very long time. (historically at least since the Neolithic) That said as history goes in cycles, it is likely that things will eventually get turned around. Or new leaders will take over and turn greedy and selfish.

I think it is pretty much a job requirment. Ruthless is generally in the CV as well. Sneaky, while not a prerequisite will definitely give the candidate an advantage over any rivals.

Life's always been hard, life's always been full of trials and tribulations. There have always been haves and have-nots, innocents have suffered, bad things have happened to good people, all of it.
And there have always been those who somehow imagined that there was a 'better Age' sometime before the current one.
I think this is a nice realistic view on things. However, since steampunk offers escapism, this should be balanced by von Corax' reply: I am quite happy to call the modern world "home."
I just don't want to spend all my time at home...
These two combined are quite healthy, me thinks.

Personally I don't have much against the modern world itself, it's just that the majority of it appears to be populated by generally irrespectible, irresponsible, idiotic and incompetent people who seem to have lost the concept of being nice to other people or even themselves. That could just be me being mean and bitter, but that's what I've gathered from most of my experience.
Anyway, enough of my cheery talk. Battenberg anyone?

Homo homini lupus. Do you expect it to be different in another area, or at another place, other than your own (Victorian) Utopia?

I'm not unhappy with the modern world, I love the conveniences (namely the Internet). It's the people that bother me... I've come to expect a certain degree of disrespect, to the point that, and this just happened to me, that I flat out ignored someone who just wanted to get a picture for the yearbook of me (or some class, not sure). It's hard to be polite to everyone when you expect the worst of them. I don't like being seen as the anti-social jerk, but I hate strangers poking fun at me.

Yes, I'm unhappy with the modern world. Where's the glorious future I was promised as a child? Where's my robot butler? Where's my laser gun? My flying car? Houses on the moon? Yes, I am unhappy, not out of some longing for days past, but for what could have been. The world was supposed to be better than this.

Hmm, has anyone ever done a "Do you think you could really live in the Victorian era?" thread? Yes, I'm unhappy with the modern world. Where's the glorious future I was promised as a child? Where's my robot butler? Where's my laser gun? My flying car? Houses on the moon? Yes, I am unhappy, not out of some longing for days past, but for what could have been. The world was supposed to be better than this. Amen to that. I guess its my own fault. I grew up a Star Trek fan, so I always expected things to be better in the future. Now that we're here it seems if anything, we're devolving. Life in the modern age has just made me sad and bitter.

Yes, it's really difficult isn't it? I too, being a teenager in the (19)60s just accepted that progress was normal what with the space race, 2001, supersonic flight, the disappearance of diseases in the UK like, polio, typhoid, TB and rickets - care of the vulnerable, colour TV, FM radio, personal transport - and so on. Not surprising, since from an early age I had been fed a fabulous view of the future often from the centre spread of the Eagle comic! So, what went wrong? These diseases are far from eradicated. Personal transport is under threat by the petrochemical industry milking the world for personal profit, media is saturated with trivia and the vulnerable seem to be worse off as each year goes by... So, yes, I am unhappy that we seem to have blown it - my generation. Still we have not (yet) fully reversed the gains of my parent's and grand parent's generations. I am currently reading Operation Mincemeat, the story of how the body of Glyndwr Michael, the mentally ill son of a Welsh miner who died destitute, ill and alone, was used to fool the Germans about the planned invasion of Sicely in 1943. Reading of how Glyndwr's family struggled with poverty, no education, no health care and no hope reminds me that although things seem bad, they can still get an awful lot worse if we don't buck our ideas up now.

People. That's what went wrong... there's enough for everyone's material greed, but not enough for everyone's spiritual greed.
Anyways, what are you guys doing about it? Technology can only be used as a means of control when control of technology is in the hands of the few. Economic self-sufficiency must come as a prelude to political self-sufficiency. The open source movement's got it right, with their focus on spreading the fruits of humanities progress to everyone. The tools of bioengineering, once in the hands of the poor, will revolutionise the world system. Sure, the government will try to stop it - but if it's widespread enough, then they'll be fighting the wind. All it takes is for people to reject the system, and the system will fall. Don't be afraid of the big bad wolf of government. Those in power will usually try to stop progress, but...
If they can't catch me, they can't kill me.

Well, over the past thirty-five years I have been insinuating myself into a "comfortable middle-class existence" as part of my long-range plot to conquer the world. Phase One has almost come to fruition.
