Overbeck’s
An exotic and fascinating hidden treasure perched high on the cliffs above Salcombe. The Edwardian seaside home of eccentric scientist Otto Overbeck is surrounded by subtropical gardens and overlooks miles of beautiful coastline and estuary. In the Museum you can see Otto Overbeck’s amazing invention: the 'Rejuvenator'; hear the Polyphon: a giant Victorian music box, and be intrigued by the eclectic collections of natural and maritime history. Outside you can explore the banana garden, meander through the woodland, or relax beneath the palms and soak up the spectacular panorama. In the daytime it is the perfect day out for families who enjoy exploring, or the keen gardener who wants to be inspired and excited. At night time it is the playground of a number of people who previously spent time here who, for whatever reason, still lurk in the gardens, corridors and attics of Overbeck’s…
Overbeck’s has been in the National Trust’s care for over eighty years now and throughout it’s history staff, volunteers, YHA guests, contractors and visitors to this intriguing place have reported ghostly happenings. Some have even been driven away from the place, abandoning their jobs and swearing never to return. In the 80s, the custodian wrote a book of ghost stories relating to Overbeck’s and created an activity for the children at the property called ‘Fred the Friendly Ghost’ – a wax figurine that hides in a secret room behind a secret door. Fred still hides today, thirty years on, and new experiences of
paranormal activity continue to be documented.
The Paranormal Investigators
TIP (Torbay Investigators of the Paranormal) are a group of like-minded individuals who all share an interest in investigating unexplained phenomena by using individual psychic ability whilst recording events in darkness on night-shot cameras.
The group has been going now for nearly 16 years and meets every Monday night at the beautiful and atmospheric Churston Court Hotel just outside Brixham. We now also meet in Exeter once a month at The White Hart Hotel (also very haunted!) under the guise of TIP-X. New members are always welcome to both meetings and can be contacted via our Facebook page TIPFILES.
The Schedule
During the evening you will have access to the gardens at Overbeck’s, the museum, and parts of the Youth Hostel (a special privilege). You will be part of a team of experienced paranormal investigators and will explore the property under their expert guidance and continual supervision.
We ask that you arrive from 7.30pm for an 8pm start when the evening will begin with introductions and a brief summary about TIP. You will then be led around the garden and parts of the house by a National Trust staff member so that you can make notes of any preliminary thoughts and feelings.
The group will then be invited to gather in the tea-room for refreshments which shall include a selection of crisps, and cakes as well as hot and cold drinks. Once everyone has had their share of food and drink you will have the opportunity to complete some exercises in psychic ability.....this is where we
will encourage you to try out various objects used for psychometrics and have a go at pot dowsing! Everyone will then be split into groups and paired up with members of TIP to work in the various areas in more detail. There will be time for approximately 45 minutes in each of the four main areas—the garden, the museum, the secret room, and upstairs in the youth hostel. You will get time to visit each area and once finished the group will gather for a final debrief. If there have been some interesting results throughout the night then there may be an opportunity to revisit an area for one final concentrated effort. The event will finish around 1-2am… unless of course interesting things are happening!
