I have contracted the Spanish Influenza, or perhaps Influenza del Puerco, or Evian Flu (too much bottled water, don'cha know)...
It is not what I would call fun. Temperature at 100.7 Fahrenheit, fluctuating. When it gets to 104, I will sell...
If you get it too, chime in here - misery does love company, you know.
Cheers!
Chas.

My feverish brain was coming up with ideas - converting this neat copper tank into a humidifier, or similar projects - to furnish a sick room in proper pseudo-Vic fashion.
All sorts of nostrums (nostra?) were available in the period - somewhere I have a "Dr. Kilmer's Swamp Root" bottle - and I may have to make up some proper labels. "Doctor Feelgood's Panacea", or some such.
Cheers
Chas.

I had bronchitis once, it felt like consumption.
You know, TB is always portrayed as one of these "glamorous" diseases where you just get really pale and weak, but no one ever talks about all the mucus mixed with blood you spit up!

I once suffered from a bout of pleurisy.....upon hearing the diagnosis, I thought "What next? Chillblains and catarrh?"

I had pneumonia once and that was... horrific. Victorian diseases are one thing that, from my experience, I really do not want.

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

A long time ago (Pre 2000) while working as an Incarceration Reeducation Engineer on a lovely Southern Campus (Angola) I had the unique experience to actually be poisoned with a "Choleraish" or "Dysentery" algae bloom! The inmates we were reeducating took yeast, and other filth, and mixed it with rain and creek water. As the IRE staff were accustomed to eating our food cold, which the inmates prepared for the staff, we never noticed that something was off with the hot dogs that evening. About 8 hours later all 12 of the officers who ate at that meal sitting began experiencing sever "intestinal" issues! We all went to the medical bay there at the institution where it was apparent that something was amiss, so they evacuated us to the local hospital where upon further testing (and 5 of the most painful "intestinal issue" hours I have ever had later!) did they determine it was a Cholera-ish/Dysentery type infection. 5 days later when we were rehydrated and released we set about finding the person responsible (Which took all of about 20 Minutes) the institution charged him with 12 counts of aggravated second degree battery, but he pled down to second degree battery, at 12 counts. Which added 36 years to his sentence, and a fine $12,000. Not that the time mattered as all at the facility were there for life, but due to the attack on staff his custody level was changed so that he now 13 years later is still living in the dungeon!

Presumably not Listeriosis from a bad cantaloupe, but this CDC food contamination warning is a newie. markf http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/news/20110913/cdc-warning-deadly-listeria-in-cantaloupeWhat are the symptoms? The symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhea . . . if infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur.
