In the last 6-10 months I have regrettably not added much in the ways of steampunk attire to my wardrobe. I have, however, grown a beard, so i guess that works:

I have been informed that the branch of Blackwells Books that resides on the ground floor here at The Wellcome Collection will shortly be stocking certain moustache/grooming related items to cash in celebrate the amazing lip weasel sported for many years by our illustrious founder, Sir Henry Wellcome The branch already sells a number of anatomical/medicine related stuff ..pens and keyrings in the shape of various human bones..syringe pens and markers..skulls and skeletons of various sizes..rubber squeezy organs and sections of brain..plush dolls of Freud, Darwin and Florence Nightingale. They also have a small selection moustache related novelties but very soon they will be stocking quality grooming products which I am lead to believe will include traditional shaving kits, moustache/beard combs and (I'm hoping) moustache wax. I shall keep you posted as and when I hear more. Watch this space...

Is there any way to get a good idea as to whether or not you can grow a beard without attempting to survive the possible mishaps that occur if it appears you can't? I tend to look very young if I keep my head shaved, which I like to do... but I think I would be able to counteract that with facial hair.

I'm afraid there are few indicators of the ability to grow a good beard. Fortunately, the worst failures show early, and so you can abort the attempt before actually showing more than an unattractive scruffiness, but to see if you can grow something nice or just something, you really have to just do it and see how it turns out. Generally, if it isn't looking good at seven weeks, it isn't going to improve.

What would be 'looking good' at seven weeks? And how much does age factor into it? I'm only 17, but most of the males in my family can get at least a basic kind of layer, though they're all older by a decade or more than I am.

Essentially, not scraggly, patchy, peachfuzz, lopsided, or excessively weird looking. It's ok if you don't have enough for the style you want at an early stage, provided you get a reasonably even layer of beard. Futher growth and styling can follow. Sometimes you can trim a beard that looks bad at the edges into a smaller style by cutting away the bad patches.
At seventeen, you can afford to try again every two years, but around 25, you've got all the beard you're getting.

The trick I was taught is to stop shaving for a few days, maybe a week if you have fair hair or a slow-growing beard, but basically until it moves from 5 O'clock shadow to LOST. At that point, shave a chin / neck line into your beard. Having a strong, artificial edge immediately changes your look from 'too lazy to shave' to 'growing a beard' by making it look deliberate. As others have mentioned, you'll start to see where your beard comes in strong, where it comes in faintly and where you'll never get a beard without divine intervention. My advice is to choose a style which does not include any part of your beard which looks weak; a basic goatee is safe for most men who can grow any kind of beard, since the hair around the mouth seems to grow in most strongly, but the soul-patch or chin-stripe can work for the same reasons. Once you start shaving a shape into your beard though, you'll probably need to shave about twice as often as before. Where a little weekend stubble once looked okay, a bearded man seems to look awful as soon as the stubble shows through. You might also want to start combing your beard to stop it looking like a bramble-bush and to keep from getting things caught in it. Oh, you might want to stop eating mayonnaise too; only smores beat mayonnaise for sheer 'wrongness' when caught in a bushy beard... around 25, you've got all the beard you're getting I'm not sure about that. I had a passable goatee from maybe twenty-seven, but nasty patchy fur on my cheeks. Five years later, I need to keep my patchy neck well-trimmed (which is fine, since I've never been into neck-beards), but I can finally do a full face of fur.

I really wish I hadn't seen this thread - I'm now so tempted to try and grow some interesting facial hair, but having just started a new job I'm not sure how they'd take it during the early, slightly scruffy stages...hmm, whether to start now or wait until Movember as an excuse.....

This is the most recent (close up) shot of the lip weasal. This was last month at the 3rd F&M Regimental Dinner. Should point out I'm doing my Terry-Thomas impression..I don't actually have a space in my teeth. I have decided to re grow back my muttonchops in time for Asylum. I've refrained from whiskers and/or beard for a couple of years as my beard is now almost white and and my whiskers grey and I think it ages me about 15 years! However looking back at old pics of me with the whiskers .... ...I think they look really good and very steampunk..far more so than just the 'tache..which is more 'Chap' than steampunk I think. And yes...my 'tache in the first pic has been dyed darker..

Movember is upon us again. The time for men everywhere to prove their masculinity (and help raise awareness and funds for testicular and prostate cancer) by seeing how much of a Lip Weasel they can cultivate in the next 30 days. To mark this the newly re-named 'Elizabeth Tower' aka Big Ben was sporting a rather fetching (albeit blue!) handlebar 'tache yesterday. http://www.london24.com/news/big_ben_gets_a_blue_moustache_for_movember_1_1676858

Speaking of Movember, my friends and I have formed a team to raise funds http://mobro.co/adamcoffman
if anyone is interested in contributing. Our team name is Tickle Me, Hair MO. This will be the first time I've grown a mustache, although I shaved off my beard on the 31st since one of the rules of Movember is to begin the month clean shaven. This is my goal...

I'm a mutton chop man myself. My father had a big red pair when I was young and I couldn't wait to get my own. On the subject of facial hair, this might get a few laughs from around the room.

A Viking re-enactor friend once gave his moustache a most impressive (if unintentional) send-off when he tried fire-breathing with absinthe. Where are you now, Rich?

I posted on this thread once very long ago, when I still wore the amish beard that you see in my profile picture. I have since obtained a lovely bowler hat and new facial hair. I was very worried when first adopting this beard that I would receive negative comments, but my experience has been quite the opposite. I manage a cafe in southern Vermont, and I get many compliments on a daily basis from my customers. It's quite nice actually.
