The world certainly needs more sideburns.
I go the Alexander way regarding my facial hair. Can't stand brick-red stuff. Together with the rest of my complexion, I wouldn't be allowed to enter America due to fear of a second Viking invasion.

My face, such as it currently is: I think I shall finally concede defeat and shave my "mustache", as it is by my perception woefully inadequate.

Vikings are more than welcome! Where's your wife from, Dusza? Florida, actually. But her Grandparents hailed from the island of Bornholm. Though she hasn't lost any of the Viking attitude and adventurous spirit I assure you! DB

I bet the prevalence of face hair says something about a society. A society with face hair is probably one that values such grown up things as responsibility and maturity. Whereas a society without suffers from some kind of peter pan syndrome.

Now that is quite the idea, sir. I fear I'm suffering from a bit of insomnia tonight, and shall ponder the very aspects of that, as I enjoy a nibble cheese and a beer.

Can I just quickly say that I silently loathe everyone here. Sitting around, talking about your 'dos and styling and grooming tips, bah! Bah, I say! I'm a third of my way through my twenties and I get nothing more than light stubble after a week or three of trying to get it to grow out. I was cursed with anti-lycanthropy, it would seem, so I'm venting my anger towards my own un-facial hair in the only way I know how: at those blessed with luxurious, full growth. Oh, how I long for stylish chops or a proper curled mustache... *pines*

i could not agree more benthic! I'm at my wits end to the point of going to the local costume shop, buying false handlebar mustache and affixing it to my face on a daily basis!

I would like to add onto this that maybe it should be more defined. Such as if the society in question could grow facial hair in the first place. There have been many indigenous cultures that were unable to sprout facial hair, until the mixing of Northern European DNA into their own. Such as the Native Americans, Japanese, Hawaiians.... Also, some societies see facial hair as an animalistic/barbaric thing, and consider themselves that more evolved/refined/classy/ whatever. I do agree just from my own experiences that I look about 4-6 years younger once I shave. I'm 25, and when I shave after leaving it to grow for a while, my girlfriend comments that she feels like she's dating a highschool kid. Can I just quickly say that I silently loathe everyone here. I'm in the opposite boat that you are. You could gladly have my ability to grow facial hair. Forget 5 O'clock shadow, I get a noon shadow. It's a right pain trying to be all smooth for a date, but by the end of it, the stubbles grown enough to scrape up my Ladys chin. I would much rather to not be able to grow facial hair, or at least not as abundantly as I do.

This has turned into a rather interesting discussion. Recalling my time in the military, most of the soldiers there derided the idea of growing a beard or moustache, even when they eventually left the service. Until my mid 30's, my beard looked more like an imitation of Yassir Arafat's than a regular western beard. Once I hit 40, I did notice that my beard started to really fill out. So now that I'm over 50, I have good, thick sideburns, that when trimmed up into a Franz-Joseph and combed out on the lower edge, make splendid "thigh ticklers". I'll have to post a recent picture. I don't think it's a mistake that the British senior sergeants are the ones with these large, well-rounded handlebar moustaches. It just takes time to get there. I would also hope to think that you younger guys are not considering abandoning steampunk when you get a bit older.

Apparently one of the reasons you don´t see Amish with moustaches is that they are considered militaristic. If you look at military men from the victorian age, they do always seem to have moustaches. Though I think many modern day armies advise against facial hair, because you can´t fit a gasmask over a beard.

Not sure if it is still true but British Naval regulations used to allow full beard and moustache (had to be both) as long as it was not "of rank and apostolic growth"

This was true when I was in the service, in the mid 1970's. The gas mask used at the time by the US army had to seal against the face. Nowadays, with the large number of women on the armed services, the gas mask has changed, to a full hood device, that is sealed differently. This allows those service people with longer hair to still use a gas mask; although, they still don;t like the idea of the large handlebar moustache, which is too bad.

I join the ranks of my brothers who have yet to be able to grow facial hair to their content. Slowly we shall grow in numbers, until one day, we will strike!
In all honesty though, I'm still young, and looking forward to the day when a enough will sprout that it is worth trying.

This is why firefighters are either clean shaven or sport a mustache only.

I could no longer resist, after looking at an older thread and realizing that my facial hair is older than most of the posters on this forum I am right there with you, Capn! Perhaps we should form an Elder Statesmen's board. . . . Lovely whiskers!
