I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I think they wouldn't seem out of place in Victorian times. The older of the two looks and acts like an elderly eccentric British aristocrat (he has a big heart though). I like to imagine the other one is his less uptight transatlantic cousin or niece. They are my best friends.

Do yours snore too? Ours seems to sleep 20 hours a day... and so do our other animals come to think of it Smiley

The younger one snores very loudly (much more loudly than one would expect from a dog of her size).

I will stick with my cats, though I would really love to have a dog, think ferrets are awesome and wish I had the skills to tame a hawk.

They are adults now and quite pampered with lovely glossy fur ( Thanks to their expensive cat food). The one on the left is Wade, the one on the right is Penny.

I have to agree with the idea of birds, but not just any bird. You'll want one that's intelligent. One that can devise simple tools and solve problems. (Another example of tool use.) One that can recognize familiar voices. One that is able to process mirror information. And of course, one that dresses in a stylish black.  Wink

Jack Daws would be decent Cheesy. I'm somewhat partial to the Magpie though. But the're all family with the corvids.

Supprised nobodies mentioned large beetles or octopi.

I present to all the mascots of the Birdnest

Littens ... A tiny cat; catcher and consumer of mice, rats and small dogs.  A must on an airship.  You may only catch glimpses of her, but you will certainly find a mouseless tail or two.

Mr. Mustoffoles ... Comforter and medium sized dog (although he's actually a cat).  Also useful for as a substitute for wool.  Great for the children and ladies in need of comfort on an airship.

Our other cat, Abstract, can not bothered with the musings of humans.

I would nominate the Inca Tern, just for being one of few animals to sport a handlebar moustache.

I would also vote a cats, what about my cat Pocky, she is an excellent insect hunter and lap warmer!

The Inca Tern is a very lucky bird.

These wonderful Steampunk Animals should be in a book.  With their photographs.  Though I think the Birdnest cats might be disqualified as extraterrestrial -- those eyes --?  The Inca Tern certainly has the look, if perhaps not the character.  Wolfhounds are definitely Steampunk, and smelly, scrappy terriers, and bulldogs, and there are so many that would be perfect in a book.

I vote for my parrot Rupert.  He is wicked, a beautiful shade of green, and can make the whistle and explosion of a dropping bomb from an airship.

I've often thought that falconry and airships would mix well. Keeping a falcon to hunt birds (or whatever other suitably-sized airborne creatures inhabit your world) could be a source of fresh meat on long voyages.

You could also train a bird of prey to spot other airships or kraken, a raptor's vision would be a lot better than any optics available at the time. (I remember reading somewhere that pigeons have been used in searchplanes when people are lost at sea since they're better than humans at spotting small things floating in the ocean, and could be trained to peck a button to signal when they saw something.)

Falconry gear (both what the bird wears and what the falconer wears) also has steamy potential.

Planet of the apes would be substantially cooler if all the apes were wearing Victorian clothing.

I daresay, in Steampunk worlds, the perfect animals depends on one's station in life.

Surely, the nobility would do well with spaniels, lap dogs, sight hounds and other hunting dogs and imported Asian cats, while the other classes would do well with spirited terriers, scruffy and otherwise, sheep-herding dogs, rat-hunting cats, ferrets and birds.
