If you can't make a mistake you can't make a thing

« on: September 12, 2011, 07:52:16 am »

As was announced at the weekend, there are going to be some changes to next year's spectacular in Lincoln, due to the Lawns being put up for sale by the council.  So, to get the ball rolling, here is somewhere to put suggestions for renaming the event for next year, or to confirm what it's called already.

Here's to The Asylum.

I think the name 'The Asylum' is just so right for the event, in so many ways.  On the one hand, it's a place of sanctuary, away from the cares and woes of the rest of the world.  On the other, we're all committed eccentrics, and so, all just a wee bit mad!  And it allows one  verbal bits of whimsy like describing ourselves as all being Asylum seekers escaping the horrors of (place-name of your choice) and wishing to reside permanently within Her Majestys domain (waves at Flora, grinning).

I say, stick with 'The Asylum' as a name for the event, even if it's no longer held AT the Asylum.

Totally agree- The Asylum is a perfect name, why change it? We are all a little bit mental and in need of the retreat into our steampunk lives (referencing Count Rostov and his marvelous poem there!)

It could always have a tagline like 'Escaping the jacket' or 'on the loose' or 'breaking out'

and maybe if it doesn't get sold and it heads back there for 2013 it could simple be 'return to...'

I think a perpatetic Asylum would be an excellent idea.

Why change the name, just because the venue is changing?

With you all the way on this one. It's too good a name to change whatever happens with the Lawns. Anyway the Bishop Grosseteste arm of the University is just as much of a mad house should they choose to hold the event  there. Also the County Assembly Rooms would be a cracking Georgian venue for the Ball.  In fact, the Victorian Stuff Ball (also called the Cake Ball), the greatest event of the County, was always held there.

I think it would be a regrettable mistake to change the name thus losing such an identity.

The name 'The Asylum' has now been going for three years and is firmly fixed in the minds of people. A name change could be in danger of fading into the mists of Google and the like.

So, in reiteration, for me PLEASE keep the name  'THE ASYLUM'.

Asylum, 'til now has been a reference to it being a Madhouse. From here on in, it seems like it's the other form of Asylum, a safe place or refuge. A glove that fits on both hands, it would seem.

I think to some extent the name will be easier to use.

Until now it is mainly referred to as 'The weekend at the Asylum' and 'The Asylum' for short.

It would be nice for it to take on the specific name of 'The Asylum'

Personally can't see a point in changing it, as it has become a brand in itself.... mention the asylum and everyone recognises it...
