I was reading the thread " Victorian Banknotes" and it made me wonder.....Has anybody here got Checks with a Steampunk theme? Would be a cool thing to design and submit to banks for their consideration.

I'm about to have a steampunk bank (a lovely glass jar with a brass lid)...if my bank does not stop changing policies. I think it would be interesting to get some of the old designs from various antique bank documents and replace the central images with airships and things like that.

My bank offers a quasi-Victorian design-- parchment-look background, with scrollwork border and "Pay to the order of" in a style like the old medicine bottles. A bit spendy, but it's there.

There are a few places that allow you to put your own photos on cheques, so you might be able to use artwork as the "photo", but generally speaking, getting special cheques is not that simple due to the requirements the (US at least) government has for printing them. And you'll never get away from the blocky digits at the bottom of the cheque since they are required to be there and to look that way (just FYI).
The UK has also set in motion the elimination of paper cheques in the next few years in favor of debit cards. So not many banks will likely be willing to do designs beyond what they have in-place already.
Not to burst anyone's bubble or anything.

Actually, I'm fairly sure that public outcry has put paid to the disappearance of cheques now...

I would be happy to see them continue, myself. Don't care much for electronic-only processing! But here (US), paper cheques are steadily disappearing in favor of debit cards and the crazy wave-and-go cards/phones. JIT

By the way, I am fairly sure that the motto on the American Imperial notes should be "In Nos Ego Fides" or have an object for "Nostrum". As it stands, it says "I have faith in our . . . ", rather than "I have faith in us".
I assure you, they are a splendid effort, far beyond my meager skills, and only people who know a bit of Latin would know, but it could be corrected so easily . . . .

I started doing Steampunk currency, and never finished the $5's or $1's.... Still I'd be up for taking on this project.... These would be great for a steampunk festival, instead of tickets for drinks, rides and other attractions. I'm sure a fair few people would just change their cash and keep some for souvenirs. And maybe if the world's economy collapses they might become worth something in themselves and you could become the world bank of steampunk Love the owl theme, naturally.

This is timely; it is time for us to order new checks for the new house.
I have been searching on line for a traditional, 19th century style check offered by one of the standard check printers, but haven't found anything close, much less anything I like. I don't really want to try printing my own.
Does anybody know a company that has such a thing?
Thanks!
Chas.

Have a look at the Harland Clake website. Their "Colonial Classic" might do.

Thanks, DH! Funny - I didn't realize it, but the Harland Colonial Classic is what we had already picked out from what our bank offers. It isn't quite the thing, but it is the best we have found so far, by far.
Yes, it is probably quixotic, but I am still hoping to find something like the classic Wells Fargo checks (though I don't have a Wells Fargo Bank account) from the 19th century off the site that Aku gave the link to.
If I don't find something soon, though, it is going to have to be the Harland.
Thanks again
Chas.

I may be mis informed but I believe here in the United Kingdom if all the details are in place a cheque can be issued on quite literally anything. This was brought to my attention by the gentleman who issued a cheque on a cow. As a sidebar I happen to know of a particularly famous person who where ever possible pays by cheque as he/she knows they are invariably retained as souvenirs and not in fact cashed.

The Bank of Denver gave me the most nineteenth century checks I've ever seen, as a free option. Pity I no longer live in Colorado. I guess you need to find a bank with a sense of history. Anyway, I agree that the Colonial Classic design is more of a "not so bad design" than a "good design."

...and yet no mention is made of the banks response to cow based cheques inspired by the fiction. Perhaps they were all honoured. Or perhaps not.
