http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=198316133561129Worcester Victorian Christmas Fair and Punknic 2011The Time: Saturday, December 3 · 7:00pm - 10:00pm The Place: The Saracen's Head; 4, The Tything, Worcester , WR1 1HD Ladies and Gentlemen; we have a plan! The esteemed establishment of the Saracen's Head* are looking forward to welcoming us back after a successful event there in 2009. As it stands, the approximate timetable for the day will run something like this: 2 o'clock: group rendez-vous in Worcester, followed by a gentle stroll around the city centre taking in the sights and sounds of the famous Victorian Christmas fair and it's stalls, entertainments and food on offer. No doubt mulled wine and/or Baileys Hot Chocolate will be indulged in. At some point we must descend on the Carousel for a group photo [if anyone has anything particular they'd like to see or visit, please ask and myself or another Worcesterite will be happy to guide you; in particular, there are several antique places worthy of perusal on They Tything/Foregate Street. 5 for 6pm: arrive at the Saracen's Head and wet our whistles with a pint of real ale, or tipple of choice. The function room has been booked and we'll have the skittle alley set up; if you feel like a little music to set the proceedings off, that can be arranged. Time for the punknic! IF you have not had the pleasure of attending a WMSA punknic before, it's very simple: bring some items of food to share; eat, drink and indulge and then everyone decides who takes what home what out of the masses of food that's inevitably left over... (you are invited to bring something home-made as it's chance to chow off one's culinary skill but this is BY NO MEANS compulsory. In Worcester there is a Co-op, an M&S and myriad convenience stores to purchase items, and there are take-away places along the Tything. There is a £50 hire charge for the room, payable on the day so at some point I'll do a whip round to collect to cover this. Hopefully it will require only between £2 to £4 per head. OR we can say a flat rate of £5 per head and spend the rest at the chippy over the road so we have hot food after a cold afternoon's preamble..? *They are home to the Worcester Re-enactors meets, so they are used to nutters...

I'd like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Van Horne for her efforts in researching potential venues, and Ms Moore for the time put into looking up possible entertainments. Thank you for your support!

Are there any arrangements for dropping off food during the afternoon, rather than lugging it about around town?

Yep, the Saracen's are good like that. We can drop items off during the afternoon, for that reason.

I'm not sure if we can make it now: Rob's got a stinker of a cold and I'm pretty much guaranteed to get it too. I've a feeling this weekend might just be catching up on sleep. It's probably best for your numbers if we say no, and we'll text you if anything changes. Sorry, was looking forward to catching up

The Memsahib and I will definitely be there for the evening, and we'll try our hardest to make the 2p.m. meet.
Where is the 2p.m. meet, by the way?

This is a very good question... I shall be landing by train, so may need to print a map off in advance...

I'll be landing by train too (but only a short run from Malvern for me). Will drop my punknic off food at the pub first before hunting out everyone.
Captain B and The Governess - what time are you aiming to arrive at Foregate St station. Depending on train times I might be able to time my arrival for around (but won't know my actual train time options until I get to parents in Malvern tomorrow night).

Pleased to report that I have done a recce around the fair and there are no less than THREE cheese stalls purveying their wares.
If we say 2pm at the Elgar Statue, will that be suitable? It's directly opposite the Cathedral (anyone will be able to point you in the direction of the Cathedral) and has enough space around to congregate. It is at the far end of the High Street [which is pedestrianised] from Foregate street station so walking there will give folk chance to pick out points of interest etc. (There is also a multi-storey car park very near by, off the roundabout).
If anyone needs my number that doesn't have it, please pm me.

Can we drop off food at the pub before our 2pm meet time, or would it be best to go there mob handed?

Captain B and The Governess - what time are you aiming to arrive at Foregate St station... We'll arriving by motor conveyance rather than train. If anyone needs my number that doesn't have it, please pm me. Due to commitments on Saturday morning we may very well miss the 2p.m. meet. Perhaps we will catch up with folk during the afternoon. Mary, has your mobile number changed in the last year?

With regards to dropping items off beforehand, I am still awaiting a call back from the landlady to confirm this. However, shall we assume that yes, we can- as we could in 2009- and should that not be the case I'll bring the car down and we can deposit items in that. (The downside being I'll have to be there to lock/unlock the car, and I really don't know how close I'll be able to find a parking spot.) I'll be bringing a slow cooker so we can have hot veggie chilli and I'll be d*mned if I'm carrying that around town with me all afternoon. Mary, has your mobile number changed in the last year?
Yes, it has; have pm'ed you.

Many thanks to Madame Steamblast for arranging this! It was a good day out, with the usual conducive company and lashings of food! I didn't take many photos (for me, anyway), and they aren't great; but you can take a look at them here: (should be an accessible to public link)

Another photo has cropped up on the BSC board on facebook (by our newest recruit, perhaps??) Thank you everyone for coming... if the WMSA is to have a motto, it should be "Never knowingly undercatered"

Thank you to everyone, but most especially Steamblast Mary, for a splendid day. A Christmas fayre, steam gallopers with fairground organ, excellent company, and enough good food to keep a small nation self sufficient for a month. I think that after her performance on the skittles alley, Mary should henceforth be known as 'Steamhammer' Mary.
