Augustus Longeye - I can't see your screenshot, spoiler not working.

When I try to open the image in a separate window I get a 403 (Forbidden) error.

Hmm.... That should have fixed it then. No idea what was going on, but yay for own domain space!

I must admit I never muse the taskbar. I mean literally EVER. Any time I have an open window (because I'm on a laptop and I never move too far from the keyboard) I always alt+tab my way to what I need. I used to do exactly what you did with hiding, but in the end I kept forgetting it and unwittingly bringing it up when I went to scroll/exit etc.

I'll admit, my setup probably won't work for most people, but it evolved as my computing habits did Wink

That's why my desktop is completely devoid of icons... I'm a bit of a neat-freak when it comes to file structures, so I never have anything laying around!

Nicely minimalist, but it still isn't showing up inline.

EDIT: The URL I get from "Copy image address" is https://sites.google.com/a/dorksanddorkettes.com/donation/Desktop.png?attredirects=1, which is different from the URL in your post or the one I see in the location bar when I click "Open image". Further, when I copy the above URL to a new tab, I see the screenshot, but if I click directly on the link above I get a "Download attachment" page.

I begin to suspect that Google is a good image host for Brass Gogglers to avoid.

Yes, I'm starting to think that myself. All I've done is stick it up on my space there, so technically handing out the link of the image should just show the image... apparently not. Well if the link you just stuck up works I'll not jinx it, but I will look into that. That is bloody annoying.

Well, it sorta kinda works. It takes you to a "Download" page, with another link that shows the screenshot.

Anyone here use Sysmetrix? If so, here's a little something to go with the arial battle fleet wallpaper:

I have a new widget I am working on, here's my desktop:

See the four railway semaphore arms on the vertical pole? - A British railway signal pole. If you can suggest a usage for it I am open to ideas.

Network activity? Have the yellow flags move for UL, and the red for DL?

@Aleister Crow -That's a good one - The semaphores are only in an ON or OFF state so they might only be useful for indicating wireless state ON/OFF and cable LAN state ON/OFF. They can't really indicate the level of traffic flow as they have no intermediate setting.

When the widget is made available for download you'll see how it works, a click on the lever and the semaphore falls with a clunk and bounce into the OFF position.

Anyone found any good steampunky themes for Mac? Preferably Lion, but since they're just icons, Snow Leopard would do.  Smiley

I know of no Mac steampunk themes but all my steampunk widgets work on Macs (except the temperature widget), the icons are available in native ICNS format on RocketDock. I keep them platform independent where possible. http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/41305 That list does not contain all the latest icons as I'm still making new ones. The newest in PNG form are here: http://rocketdock.com/user/107284/addons/popular

Thanks, but on my mac, the only thing I can change are the icons on my desktop. All the apps there are Macintosh native. Stuff like Finder, Launchpad, App Store, System Preference, Itunes... You get the idea.

Thanks anyway, hopefully someone makes a mac one... I cannot make one myself.  Sad

The steampunk widgets are mac or windows using the Konfabulator yahoo widget engine so are 'native' to each. The Mac Dashboard was a later copy of Konfabulator, Konfabulator came first and can run on Macs and Windows with nor problem whatsoever. Mac dashboard is just another widget 'engine'.

That is the beauty of multi-platform or platform-independant engines, you can run the same widgets on windows and mac computers and  you aren't reliant on themes for only one platform.

I know you can still apply them, I meant they looked a little out of place. Since themes made for mac take the original icon and just change the aesthetics of it, but still retain the original feel. Not sure if that made sense, not sure how to put it...

Yes that is perfectly clear. Many icons due to being 'very steampunk' abandon the native look and feel altogether rather than morphing away from the standard form. They do take a bit of getting used to but once they are "in your head" they will do the job. I am so used to my icons now that they have become my 'standard' and when I have to use the boring old Windows set I feel rather lost.

When you find a suitable Mac theme then do post an image here, I am sure we'd all be fascinated to see.

PS. The widgets mentioned have nothing to do with the fonts, they are tools, eye-candy on the desktop.

This is the desktop of my Linux Mint laptop, partly steampunked with the same background as my Windows systems, same icons. Fonts not yet loaded. Uses Avant Window Manager as the dock, it is the best dock for icons of variable sizes:

I have not yet managed to get Wine to work with Yahoo Widgets yet, though a chubby bloke on youtube says he has, so no steampunk widgets as yet. Give me time...

Here's mine, made with Rainmeter, Rocketdock, and Windowblinds.  I put in an explorer window to show what happens to the title bar, etc.  It's pretty cool Smiley

Thank you for whichever are yours Smiley  I found stuff all over, so I'm not sure what's what.

Windowblinds is very stable.  It runs in realtime, and everytime I look, it's using 00cpu.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a 2.3 quad core, 8G Ram.

What I can't find are some good sounds.  Does anyone have a good link to any sound effects or the like?  I don't like long clips, but I can edit them if I need to.

It really is lovely when you can take all that corporate stuff away and relax in the desktop of your choice. I can now move from my linux laptop to my windows system with a fairly seamless transition, same icons and similar layout. A comforting and friendly welcome from each.

FYI - you can identify which are my icons easily enough, they tend to be a tadge strange and have no real theme running through them, whereas the BL icons are certainly themed, they look fairly uniform, brown, vintage and crusty (which I like). Have a look at my latest icons here: http://pinterest.com/yereverluvinunc/steampunk-today/ There might just be some new ones that appeal.

Download my steampunk clock, nixie tube and cpu thermometer widgets, you'll find they have plenty of sounds built in which you can extract yourself if you feel clever.

Ah, you have the yahoo widget things Smiley  I've been to your website a few times.  Thank you for the idea to rip the sounds, I hadn't thought of that.  I didn't get the widgets because I don't really like yahoo much.
