Widget creation is not easy but definitely possible.

The .kon file is really a XML descriptor container, it CAN also contain javascript code by wrapping it - but I feel it is best to keep the XML in the .KON file and the javascript in a separate .js.

You can basically blur things as much as you want but if you keep it simple, the way I describe, it makes it easier. In the clock code, you'll see some of the .js in the .kon file when doing simple mouse events, when it gets more complicated the javascript is entirely in the .js file

Really, when cooming to something completely new it is best to take one step at a time and don't be disillusioned or frustrated by how difficult it appears. Making a gear rotate is frankly one of the most difficult things to do. When you look at the clock code it should be apparent how things are done.

Off topic - my old house, older than it looks, 1790, at the time of pictures just had a repaint and complete restore inside and out.

Musist, as part of our deal Wink  the Steam Punk Yahoo Widget MkII is now downloadable but be aware that this is not a fully working widget as the changes to allow resizing have introduced some new bugs. If you want a working version then choose the MkI.

http://lightquick.co.uk/jdownloads/steampunk-clock-calendar-yahoo-widget-mkii.html

The only visual change is the new chain-pull that is a new feature that turns off the ticking. The resizing is achieved via a back-end slider.

I'll have to take your word for it... the Download button just returns a blank <download.html>

Still off topic; Love your house, I've just bought one that's only 13 years old. In Aus we don't have any houses as old as yours. More house envy  Huh

Some significant changes have been made to the steampunk thermometers.
Animation has been added to the steampunk thermometer yahoo widget.

The code now checks if speedfan has been installed or not. If not, then
a flashing red light indicates that speedfan is not present. If the
software is present and installed in its default location on drives c, d
or e, then it will find the installation and startup speedfan. This is
just the start of the integration with speedfan.

The crank handle now works and kicks off some animation, namely the
closing/opening of the printer. The empty printer platen is now
displayed at the left hand side of the thermometers when the printer is
closed. I like this and I think it gives the thermometers a more
steampunky-feel. Everything is resizable and has been tested. A
screenshot is displayed below. That was a good four hour's work well
spent. Please feel free to tell me what you think of the new functionality.

Here is a screenshot of my old laptop who stuck with me through thick and thin until recently. He was just getting upon the age and I had to say goodbye. I used a great deal of his components for my other computers, so his memory stays alive. This is Windows 7 running Rainmeter. My OSX desktop is no where near this steampunky nor is my Arch.

Very nice, looks like you are using the Aston thingie to skin the windows start menu, am I right?

What is the skin you are using for rainmeter? I would be creating thingies for rainmeter if it was multi-platform and not just Windows specific, OS/X and Linux support are a must.

Just had a quick look before I deleted the non-working downloaded widgets...  Size 0kb... so there was actually nothing there...

Hi yereverluvinunclebert,

Wow, you've really made some headway. The action on the printer is great. I musn't have speedfan installed, or it is showing stess levels with the red light flashing?  Huh I was playing with the script for hours last night & managed to get the gear to "tick"  Sad It would be better to have a continual motion, I'll keep trying.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, and I've had some fun with creating widgets with just images, see Woody running through the door? (Maybe some changes to my profile soon, not happy with the currnet one). Widgets are a great way to easily create & display logos or images.

I've created this Widget for a college at work, with a little touchup and highlighting in Photoshop, then quickly created with the script added to Photoshop & all done.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only one thing with the widget, It loads the icon in the sidebar, then you have to click this to display the widget on the desktop. I've also have a few that dont reappear after hybernation, just a matter off clicking the icon, or right clicking to show the Widget. Both of yereverluvinunclebert's widgets don't have this problem.

I've been busy today, I've installed Speedfan. Still didn't change your thermometer. I've had to install the beta version because the previous versions had trouble with Dell; I'm on a Dell XPS m1710 laptop. I don't know if this path to the installation is a problem "C:\Program Files (x86)\SpeedFan"?

Yes, looks like it's running hot, I'll have to get it serviced.

Then I was looking for some new icons to dress up the desktop, & found this site with a package of some amazing Steampunk icons, wallpaper & even wallpapers for you Ipad & Iphone if your that way inclined.

I think this wallpaper looks great with the Steampunk calendar/Clock & thermometer!

Honestly, it was so long ago, I can't remember, but it involved Windowblinds if I recall. The rainmeter skin is Simplesentence2, and the aetherial clocks worked so well over the schematics. When it comes to Mac and Linux though, you really can't get what you get with Rainmeter. Geeklets and Conkey coding can only get you so far... it's a shame since I am usually running OSX rather than Windows or Arch, mostly because battery life and runs cooler.

Keeper of the Brass, thanks for that, I had completely forgotten later versions of Windows use different naming convention for the programs folder C:\Program Files (x86)\SpeedFan, I will take this into account, I use this every day at work but I had still forgotten.

Those new steampunk icons are very nice, I'd not seen those before, well found! [Edit - I take that back, they are not very nice - they are superb, far better than I could ever achieve with Photoshop]

New desktop very nice indeed. Still prefer the old dark background though.

The widgets - it is very nice to be able to 'widgetise' a photoshop image. I am going to add more code to the stamp widget soon, I have some plans for it. The steampunk thermometer will have even more in the way of animation and some sounds of it's own. Most are taken from the clock but it needs some better and more appropriate noises.

Your widgets - when they are widgetised, ie. turned into zipped-up widget format, they seem to load automatically with the Konfabulator engine. When they are just .kon files they don't seem to.

Overheating - fix that soon! - Dell laptops typically have a separate fan that can be unscrewed from below and the cooling fins cleaned out. Don't leave it, they die if consistently overheated.

Musist, I will fix it! I promise. It is coming. The site I am putting it on has a 3mb upload limit and it has stretched that limit. Need to modify PHP.ini to increase it, then it will upload correctly.

Andreu, I would love to load rainmeter with that particular skin (looks very good) but I am actively restricting myself to only engines that work on all platforms. I see the end of Windows as a stable platform, Microsoft is migrating (slowly) to this cloud concept and I never depend upon Microsoft to maintain any software for more than a few short years. To this end I want to be able to run on Linux and OS/X if possible. Yahoo widgets runs on OS/X and widnoes (sic) in it's various flavours. Yahoo widgets may be usable on Linux in a year or so if Kludgets eventually does the business.

If anyone is running the original MkI steampunk clock/calendar - can you check whether it works correctly in 24hr clock mode on your flavour of widnoes? Please let me know if it does, I have someone on email stating it doesn't work properly, I am sure it was tested and worked well.

Keeper of the Brass - I have updated the LQ downloads with the latest version of the steampunk thermometer, it should now check for the presence of speedfan in the x86 folder, please let me know if it works for you.  The warning light should shine green now instead of the flashing red. There are some very minor graphic changes, the platen has a texture, the printer trunnion sits on top of the brass bars instead of underneath. I have done some analysis of methods to move the thermometer slider paper, lines and text to allow the writing of the graph and the results of some limited testing will be apparent when you crank the handle a couple of times.

It is now at version 0.9, and can be downloaded here: http://lightquick.co.uk/downloads/steampunk-cpu-gpu-temperature-monitor-yahoo-widget.html

Hi yereverluvinunclebert,
I've downloaded the Steampunk Thermometer 0.9, it opened Speedfan with the widget. The red light has stopped flashing, but is still glowing red?

BTW. I've had my laptop serviced, it isn't running as how now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Update Friday morning, It is now flashing red again, even at 46 deg C. The changes to the printer are looking great.

I have made some changes to the Steampunk thermometer widget, some new C++ code and some jiggery-pokery to scrape temperature information from speedfan.

So, what is the end result? Well it is positive. I have managed to get the
widget to read all the sensor names from speedfan's sensor configuration file.
the widget is also processing the information provided by the new windows
executable I created to extract the temperatures from speedfan and it is now using these to successfully prime the two graphic thermometers. Bu@@er me, it works...

OK, due to the fact that all computers have different hardware with a
different number of sensors it will be difficult to determine whether it works for
all hardware combinations but I think it is time to start giving it a try.

Other changes include adding code to handle the installation of
speedfan.exe in the /Program Files (86)/ or the /Program Files/ folders.
There was a bug causing it to check both folders simultaneously causing
the non-flashing red light to display. I have added the 'about' pop-up
from the menu. Added code to c++ code for speedfan.exe to check whether
speedfan is actually running. Finally the printer bars and trunnions
have been coloured brass to match the rest of the widget. Version 0.10  is available for download http://lightquick.co.uk/downloads/steampunk-cpu-gpu-temperature-monitor-yahoo-widget.html now.

You MUST have speedfan installed to make this widget work, no widget can get the temperatures from all the myriad PCs in the world, Speedfan is pretty good at doing it for almost all PCs so it is a requirement for this widget to function.

Speedfan is obtained here: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

If the thing doesn't work let me know here and I will attempt to address the bugs.

Just a few changes but enough to warrant posting a new version (0.11) for download.

http://lightquick.co.uk/downloads/steampunk-cpu-gpu-temperature-monitor-yahoo-widget.html

So, what's happened? I've fixed a little bug where the mercury/alcohol wasn't pushing up the indexes, made the alarm bell ring on an over-temperature (red) alarm, now checks the speedfan configuration file, renames it as a good backup, changes speedfan to startup in minimised fashion. The alarm now ceases on clapper move, the alarm now also ceases on a bell ding. I have ensured that any Windows-specific code is only called when the operating system is non-Mac. I have added Mac OS/X code for checking the temperatures on Mac OS/X (an unknown quantity this) - partly done but is absolutely untested.

No change in the look/feel, so no new picture here.

I removed SpeedFan in favour of CoreTemp. Gets more reliable results. Also, it would be a good idea to move your widget to its own thread.

I chose speedfan as it seems to be better supported than others some of which are now sadly no longer being developed. Each app. has it's own API so it would be possible to interface to an alternative. It would take some work though. At the moment I am just starting to get it to work on Mac OS/X but if you are really keen then I could do with some help.

Regarding the appropriateness of posting the widget info here: We have already discussed putting this thread elsewhere and I raised it specifically with the forum creator and as no objections were received, I have assumed all are happy with the current location. After all, this widget stuff is only related to how to create your own unique desktops. The only reason I am doing these to allow people to create exactly what they want - and I'm doing it for nothing...

Keeper - if you can unpack the widget using the widget converter you will find an executable in the Resources folder.
Open a cmd window and run the executable, send me the output. contact me via a personal message on this forum and you can help me diagnose the problem.

Keeper of the Brass and I have been working hard on the Steampunk Yahoo temperature widget and we now have a version that seems to work for both windows XP and Win7 families of operating systems. there were some bugs that stopped the Win7 version from working.

It will install and run on your Windows XP/WIn7 system and the thermometers will return valid temperatures. The temperatures returned will be that of the GPU and one other. However, the current version of the widget cannot guarantee it is the CPU temperature depending upon your hardware.

This due to the nature of the speedfan API that does not return names of sensors but just temperatures.

It is available for download now, version 0.12.7
