Well.. I'm sorta halfway there... SteamPunk theme.. CyberPunk background...

So I'm a GITS fan. *shrugs*

I know there are better themes out there with more of a wood/brass look... but I'm frankly hesitant to fork out $30+ for the software to use them just to pretty up my desktop.

Customising XP - the Khai Method

1: Go here and get  Uxtheme MultiPatcher   http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=308905 (it's free, no registration needed. it patches your XP to allow non M$ Xp themes)

2: Go here and choose the Theme you want... http://themes.belchfire.net/index.php?automodule=downloads&showcat=1 All will now work with your XP.

3: Consider a Desktop replacement like Aston or Litestep

well, just did this and now my system is screwed.  Any attempt to change themes or colors results in window Data Execution Prevention halting the process.  I can't change a damn thing now... so any ideas out there how to fix this?

you can always, go to your system restore before you used the uxtheme patcher.  you could try to get the correct uxtheme patcher for the service pack you have, to find out what service pack you have go to computer>right click>properties> that should give you the system information, and will tell you what service pack you have. uxtheme patcher actually hacks your guimod registry and overrides it with a new one. you should be able to restore your computer to a earlier time.

I`m not sure how much things have changed since I could properly call myself a geek, but to my memory, in order to do a restore one must have done a backup.  Like many old geeks, I dispensed with this practice more than a decade ago.

if you havent modified you sytem tasks, you computer does a restore point everytime a new program or update is installed. check out this M$ page: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx No Discs are required, unless you have a serious system error that crashed you main windows kernal. then you should be able to with the Dell* HP* windows installation disc.

I have realised, whilst looking at the excellent work on this thread that, since I have windows 7 on my laptop, there is apparently little I can do to alter the appearance of my desktop short of changing the display piture, I can't even change the fonts on the screen apparently.

Bummer

I believe that the question of modification was directed at Mr Gold with his embossed sheet-metal backgrounds.

Always a good idea with something like that to quote the original post, or even just a part of it, to make sure there are no misunderstandings.

Ah, yes indeed I was asking Mr Gold's permission to play around with his work. Should have quoted to save the confusion.

However, I'd be very interested to see sadishappyfordeeppeople's work.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on this thread; I use KDE on Linux myself and I've had a difficult time finding nice steamy themes and icons.  In the meantime, I just content myself with wallpaper.  Oh, and my airship Firefox persona; I'm rather fond of that one...

I installed Ubuntu as a secondary OS to try it out.  My XP pro is on it's last legs and I'd been considering a Linux alternative.  Set up was confusing as hell, I'm not sure what I did right but I have better functionality now than I did with windows, I just need to sort out some periphrases issues (HP all in one).

Since installing yesterday I've been keeping an eye out for potentially Steampunk Themes, what is the name of your theme?  I don't necessarily want to use that one but it might give me a starting point for finding one I like.
