I and my darling husband are newbies this year - we do know a considerate amount of steampunks already, so we'll hopefully meet allof you there, but otherwise I will be looking out for roses. We are in the Minster Lodge B&B - anybody else sleeping there so we can say hello here?  Smiley

if you are involved in historical renactment, science fiction conventions, LARPing etc you will know people at The Asylum, you would be surprised at the social connections thrown up, and steampunks are overly generous in making and helping new friends (we also have a similar reaction to arch enemies, hey its just the people we are, all or nothing!)

Crankshafts are blued, shurely?

Anyway, I've yet to meet an 'unfriendly' fellow steampunk, and I'll talk to anybody!

In fact, just last year I had a very rewarding and stimulating conversation with what turned out to be a top hat and overcoat on a coatstand.

This will be our first sojourn to the Asylum, feeling more assured that we won't be 'wrongly' attired or spend the day walking around like Mr & Mrs Billy No Mates now, I'm having a senior blonde moment though, we can't get there until Saturday so will their be sheep and roses all weekend or only Friday? Looking forward to meeting new people and hopefully making new friends Smiley

Look for imps and roses all weekend but also do not be afraid to ask any steampunk around town.  Everyone will be polite and friendly and help if they can.

Good icebreakers are :-

(1) I love your clothes (not costume)where do you get them?
(2) I love you gadget, did you make it yourself ?
(3) HMS Endurance (never be afraid to throw in a joke or pun, although the latter may attract wandering punsters, and you may never get rid of them).

Fixed that, Peter.

(4) Be careful of where you make use of word play. Doing it in small arched recess's in medieval buildings is a Pun in the Apse.
(4a.) Goggle admiration. (Sure fire winner!!)

Edited for parenthesis consistency.

For several years many articles have erroneously told the world that steampunk is a portmanteau. of steam and punk.
It is with great delight that today we can put the record straight and tell the word that in fact it is a three part portmanteau. based on Steam, Pun and K.

This shows a love of steam, Puns and breakfast.

Now the record has been set straight.
