On another ... or rather, original tangent... what would you make a steampunk kilt out of?  What would you put on it?  Obviously steel plate, rivets and leather...   What would you find useful on a utility kilt/belt/pants?

Zeus - god of manly parts

Buckles. Big chunky zippers maybe...I think shotgun shell loops would look pretty cool, with cartridges in them (empty plastic ones like you find in military surplus stores).

Hadn't thought of that.  Nice.  I'm actually thinking double utility - turn the 20 guage shotgun shells into compartments to utilize for little things.

tiny compartments like that are so hard to get things in and out of, unless maybe you use like film canisters or something

The idea came upon me while examining the bracer I wear.  I wear this every day.  It is my watch, my purse, and my tool collection.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It has a flashlight on a metal tentacle, a pair of scissors, two screwdrivers and a pair of fingernail clippers.

Where did you find this bracer?  I want one. Smiley

I kind of wonder if anything ever came of this.
Unfortunately, it looks like the OP hasn't been active for quite some time...

Not since December of 2010 in fact. That was a bad winter, has anyone checked as to whether he came out of hibernation that year?

I would have liked to have seen what he made of the steampunk kilt thing myself. I'm planning on making a new one for this year's asylum with many wonderful pockets and stuff of that ilk. No cogs though...  Grin

I'm very glad one of our new members resurrected this thread, because I would have never thought of making a utility kilt for myself.
Now that I saw that instructable on how to make one, I will definitely be giving it a try!
Next time I have any money to spend, that is...

I hope that you post pics of your creation, as I would love to see it!
And I definitely approve of no cogs on a kilt... Cheesy
Pockets and utility pouches and what-have-you, on the other hand, sound quite wonderful!

Ok, confession time...every time I see one of these discussions about kilts has been brought from the depths of who-knows-where, I secretly hope there will be more photographic evidence of the lovely kilted gents.

*hangs head in shame* I apologize for the rather unladylike thoughts, but it's only fair you should know the truth.  Wink

I will probably be wearing mine in a couple of days.
It's not steampunk at all, just a standard wool kilt in Gunn modern tartan.
However, if you want I can provide pictorial depictions  Tongue

I just received a truly incredible kilt from Alt.kilt, and I have yet to post pictures. I'll be sure to share some on here. Its not a "steampunk kilt" per se (the OP posted a couple pictures of Alt.kilt's steampunk kilts on the first page) but I did design it to fit into a steampunk outfit.

It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

I just looked through their site, and they have some really cool stuff.
When you say designed, does that mean that you created ideas for a custom kilt and they made it for you?

Yes. Their standard build is a very recent addition; up until a few weeks ago all their kilts were custom in one sense of the word or another. I chose the fabric type, the color, the hardware, if there were pockets, etc.

That is extraordinarily cool!

On a separate (but related) note, if BrassGoggles had it's own tartan, what colors would be in it?

Haha. Judging by the site's color scheme? I'd say brown, tan, and orange. Tongue

Really though, I would hope it would be colorful. Brown should probably be present, but we are too diverse a community to have a bland looking tartan.

I figured some type of brown or tan would be included, but hadn't thought about orange!
Maybe a few other people will wander into this topic and weigh in, because I think it would be pretty cool to have an "Official BrassGoggles" tartan.
I'd be willing to design it, but I want to hear what colors people think best represent us before I dive into it.

Oh wow, we should totally have a tartan! I am a member of the Utiliclan myself, and after reading through this discussion have decided that I am in need of some more kilts. We should put some thought into the BG tartan, another easy way to identify a forum member out in the Wide World.

Red seems to be prevalent on the site too. That deep maroony read. I always liked the red/brown color combo. Some white would be good too, for added contrast.
