Newb to this forum but I was looking for information on this event.  I was given a newspaper clipping that included steampunk music on the agenda.  Does anyone know more about that?

News to me... but I'll email the event organiser and find out! I was intending to include mention of steampunk music in the panel and, but wasn't intending to play any... licensing, public broadcasting, etc.

What newspaper was it in, please??

I'm not sure which newspaper as I only have a clipping.  On the reverse it has an advert for an event at the Hexagon so it's probably a 'what's on in reading' type of affair.  The final paragraph read "Also workshops on developing your own graphic novels, art competition and an Art exhibition as well as Steampunk themed music, fim and stories."  I'll now try to make a long story short: I've had next to no exposure to the woderful world of steampunk.  There's a radioshow/podcast called the Clockwork Cabaret (fellow listeners?) that I listen to but that's about all.  I was thinking of coming to the event to see another perspective on steampunk music and generally look at the cool costumes etc.  The makers of the Clockwork Cabaret have recently started a CD project with Eli August.  I thought I could try and raise a little support by chatting and maybe handing out a few flyers.  Thoughs...?

It now looks like we will be able to attend.

Not having been down to Reading in years, is there any parking at or near the Library?? Post code for Sat nav would be a help.

We will be bringing some steamy stuff and maybe a spare outfit to display. Oh and tea, cake and Gin. If you have any request for things let me know.

See you on Sat.

At the moment it looks that I'll be able to attend, even if I do have an essay to submit and a presentation to give on the following Monday... neither of which are ready yet.  Back to the word processor!

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

Splendid!

There is limited parking on Abbey Square behind the library - the library post code is RG1 3BQ and I'll PM you my mobile number. Let's see if this googlemap linkie will work...

Bewarned though... they've altered the one-way system again around Reading town centre in recent weeks.

Evangeline and I plan to get there for 10am-ish to get set-up, but the event doesn't kick off until 11.30, so no huge hurry or worry if you can't make it before then. The first steampunk panel starts at 12 noon (general introduction) and the second (fashion and gadgets) is 3pm. Luckily the library is close enough to home that, worst case, we can always pop home if we find we've forgotten anything!

I'm preparing some simple general steampunk info handouts (links to VSS, BGs and other sites, details of other events, etc) and will have pics, mags, books, etc for display/perusal.

Look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

I think the event (and our 2 steampunk panels) went down rather well, with just over 50 attendees in total, of whom about 20 sat in for each of our panels.

Good to meet up with some local steampunks, now let's keep the impetus going and make a Reading Steampunk group happen!

Thanks to everyone who came along and participated, there was some useful and constructive discussion and lots of interest. Special thanks to Lady Elsie and Major Tinker for their support, both with display items and during the panels and discussions and general socialising.

We were approached by 2 other libraries looking to hold similar events in Newbury and Wokingham (probably in 2012), I'll post details of those when things get firmed up.

Just adding my thanks too!
Was very pleased with the turnout and lovely to meet other Reading based steampunks - definitely need to get a meet-up arranged soon and make it a regular thing.
Extra special thanks to Major Tinker and Lady Elsie for their contributions to the display and their fantastic support Kiss

AF Harrold, the poet who entertained us between panels, has posted about the event on his blog with a couple of pics and the text of the poem 'Queen Victoria's Mechanical Friend' which he wrote specially for the event.

Why it's taken me a week to get round to one post I have no idea, shows how massively lazy I am. But thanks for an enjoyable day everyone and thanks for the talks, most informative.

I've already thanked AF Harrold over twitter and he said he enjoyed it as well.

Now to arrange another meetup in reading!
