So, if you are at all like me, I suspect you find yourself with times where you simply must do something with your hands (I find it to be a particularly common thing amongst us DIYers). I have a thought, however, that we steampunks are probably better at it (or at the very least, far more entertaining in our efforts). I also believe that it's the little things that give us the most insight into each other, so lets share a bit.

And it's only fair that if I ask, I share as well. I most often find myself with idle hands while at work (shame, I know, but I work on the phones) and I occupy myself in a few ways. Early mornings tend toward doodles and notes for steam/deisel/cyberpunk weaponry (a newfound passion, and leading to the creation of a very interesting tale of war in retro-futurism), and now, forum-browsing. But as I saunter into my afternoon awareness, I find myself far more fidgety. So I make people and monsters and all manner of objects out of paper, tape and push-pins. The making of these things is fun, but the best part is destroying them for science once my boss is out of the office (this is also, incidentally, my partner's favorite part of the day).

So, tell me, what do *you* do?

Mods: Feel free to move this to off topic, should it go awry. I'm hoping, though, to get a good sample of steamy entertainments!

I simply can not just  do one thing. Watching a movie in a theater is nearly torture... good thing we don't do that much.

Of course this is especially annoying because we are between houses & living in a dinky apartment that is stacked with boxes. I do not have a workshop right now so I have to somehow stay busy & still be able to make some small things while here. I have been working on a dress with complicated stone work, sometimes I do beadwork or small hand sewing.

When we are out I am constantly fiddling with my iPhone online or playing a game on it or my DSXL or PSP. I just can't not be doing SOMETHING.

Generally, if I am watching television or video, I will work on chainmail. At certain points, actual concentration is required, but 98% of chainmail time is just keeping one's fingers moving.

Stripping 100 years of corrosion and old finish from a classic shotgun with a Dremel. I do have to watch what I'm doing, but usually I'm listening to music and have the computer on also.

I always have something churning in the back of head, but here lately I have been sketching out some steampunk artifacts I would like to build and trying to get a list of supplies together.  I have also been working on my back story that will hopefully be ready sometime soon.

I have about a dozen guages I've been tearing apart and cleaning while watching TV as well although if I leave one more on the dinner table, my beatiful wife has threatened to use the infernal cranial impaction device (aka frying pan) on my head  Grin

Be safe, Ray

I work on projects, generally sewing, or play with the large bar in my ear! I have a scaffold piercing, and whenever I am thinking or distracted, I end up twisting it, and sliding it through my ear and generally messing about with it. Boys at College always say you can tell when I'm thinking because of it.

When I am in class, supposedly taking notes, I am often drawing up sketches for clothes or electronics or house plans, etc. I'm not actually a very good artist, but I can usually get the point across to myself at least so I don't forget the wonderful ideas I have come up with while the professor drones away...

I also like to write, and I often take my laptop on road trips so I can write. I have so many ideas running through my head, and somehow they have to get out!

Oh, I get so twitchy in theader, even when I'm really enjoying the movie.

I draw (and make stuff) during all sorts of situations (to the point of hearing others sigh in irritation), on whatever paper is there. In High School I had a teacher who gave me extra credit (not that I needed it) on a test because I added 'decorations'.

“Carl the Ripper” just doesn’t have the same ring.
