Great work lads!!! Here's my latest creation/modification... I bought a little yellow petron toy crossbow a while back and have finally got around to finishing it - OK so technically it's not a gun - but it's close... and here's the original... basically I ditched the stock in place of a wooden pistol grip, added timber inserts to the foregrip then painted, stained and decorated - It still needs a few coats of clear but I'm happy with the victorian look it's taken on. Although it is not a gun it is very cool and steam punky. Are there any bolts for it? You could come up with some very cool bolts that inject things on impact, etc. Great work lads!!! Thanks lads - good idea on the ammo Lazaruslong - I plan on trying a few paintballs through it and was hoping to make some lightweight vamp-stakes. As for close ups Drew - I'll post a couple after I've done the final clear coats and tidied it all up a tad. Sadly i didn't get any decent WIP shots, I've only got a few dodgy ones on my phone. I've just begun a scratch-build on a much larger, steamier xbow using some spring steel rulers I picked up - I'll make sure to get some shots.

I added an aluminum tube with cuts milled down the sides to the same model crossbow. the string runs through the cuts and the tube acts like a barrel of sorts. sits nicely in the round groove for the original darts. only problem is round items like paintballs tend to distort and the string ends up in front of them. things like nerf darts work fine. I had a bigger tube at first and used some foam round insulation as "arrows" just needed a little extra weight on the fronts. plastic dip for tool handles would probably worked perfect to weight them and still leave them safe. I was thinking of making a foam plug to go in front of the string and behind a paintball but I don't think the bow can throw a ball hard enough for it to break. might be better for shooting grapes and those tiny tomatoes. or perhaps malted milk balls, yum. ouch, then yum.

I'd be interested to see that OVP - I did try something similar with a pvc tube on a little crossbow I made for a friend's kid last year but I didn't have too much success - the plastic was a bit soft. I wondered about making a thicker "sling" type component for the centre of the string to help with paintballs etc. The problem I've found with nerf darts is that their tail is too soft and they get shredded pretty quick. I had more success when I added a flight to the tail. This is another one I've got laying around that I'm yet to finish. I later bound the dart in electrical tape for added weight and it really delivers a whack! I've pretty much abandoned the body of that bow now but still like the look of the steel bow bound with cable then hemp string and will use it again elsewhere.

here is the xbow with the aluminum tube to guide the dart. to make the dart a little stronger, slide in a piece of fast food drinking straw. I think the skinny ones from burger king are just about right or you can take a macdonalds straw and slit it lengthwise so that it can curl up smaller then slide either into the back of the dart and cut it off flush with the back of the dart. it will make it a little stronger for a while. if you are careful, a dab of hot glue inside the straw tip will stick to the little stem on the back of the dart head, inside the foam tail. but you have got to be sure you slide it in before it cools and not get any extra outside the straw. not too much or the dart will be too heavy and hurt and be unbalanced and fly poorly. here also is a sawed off shotgun I finished up for a friend, he changed his costume idea and didn't bother to tell me while I was up all freaking night trying to get it done on time. at least now I can just keep it!

nice work Otto - I'll certainly try that tubing idea on the next one - I've just picked up a nice bit of brass that would work well if cut right. I agree that the xbow doesnt have the power for your regular paint ball so i thought i'd try the new toy shop pump-action variety. Good job on that buzzbee too - that old trigger gaurd really did need to go! Did you do much to the grip? I was not a fan of how it sits in the hand - too broad and flat - so i dremmelled off as much as i could then filled the gaps with liquid nails. Once sanded it had a pitted worn look that I decided to leave. It adds to the general nastiness of the weapon! I too was asked to supply one for a costume (for a short film) but they were in a hurry and had to make do with a pump action I'd finished a while back. I thought it'd be a handy piece to have for future projects anyway and it was fun to do!

it's still fat, I added a little putty to the top and bottom to round it out but that just makes it fatter. I wanted to leave it alone so it would still work. next time I will try to skinny it up. I want to try one of the newer style over and unders and see how they're put together. I like the drawer handle/trigger guard idea, I shall have to "borrow" it. the next time you hit a big hardware store, look for "plumbers putty", it's not the same stuff I remember from years ago. the old stuff is still around, basically very sturdy modeling clay. the new stuff is a two part epoxy in a log that you cut off a chunk and knead it to mix it. it's an epoxy that will set up hard and shapes easily while it's still soft. I should think it's made it that far across the pond. there is actually a few versions of the log o epoxy. they make a wood filler one and a concrete patch one. the concrete one sucks as it has bits of rock or something in it, which makes it almost impossible to smooth much.

There are some awesome weapons on both of these threads. This is my first attempt at painting etc. Nothing like you guys create but i always wanted to see if i could... and this is my work in progress, i built it from scratch and i'm hoping to make it SP. Its 47 inches long and needs a lot of work but i quite like how the basic frame(?) came out. I'm a photogographer (dont judge those three shots, lol) and really into the girls'n'guns thing. I also like shooting Goth and Alt models and Steampunk has intrigued me for a long time.

The one built from scatch has great style. Instead of PVC, try using copper pipe and fittings for your creations. Looking forward to seeing more.

Nice work Rob - Scratch build is coming along nicely! Thanks for the tip on the putty otto - i've committed to building an ornamental long-arm to hang over the antique fire stove at my brother's amazing new mud-brick farmhouse - so all extra tricks will be welcome. Anyone got any tips for a starting point? I like the idea of a longish blunderbuss and want to work primarily with timber, brass and steel/aluminium. Perhaps an exaggerated version of this with a few subtle steamy elements? Anyone ever worked with a bugle for a barrel?

No, but I've got some cornet parts for a priming mechanism on my next long-arm build.

It has been wonderful getting to see everyone's pieces of work! Thank you for sharing your efforts. Here is a quickie (3 hour) hand gun I did for Halloween. It's rather diesel-punk rather then steamy and still need more detail bits. More to follow...

Just imagine if you could still hook the air up to it via a compressed air cylinder on your back...

Unless of course finances are an issue. last week I was in Home Depot, 3"x5" pieces of copper flashing are $7 a piece I know metal prices have gone up but ...REALLY? !!
