The Sticks by Andy Deane. Really good, horrifying book. Not the most eloquently written book, but its pretty damn realistic for the content.

Worlds That Weren't, an anthology of alternate history novellas by Harry Turtledove, S M Stirling, Mary Gentle and Walter Jon Williams that Ms Moore kindly gave me last weekend. At the moment I'm on "Shilkari in Galveston" by S M Stirling- the short story that accompanies The Peshawar Lancers.

I've recently finished reading The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man by Mark Hodder; it was entertaining as expected. Currently reading Sir Ranulph Fiennes frankly excellent biography of Robert Falcon Scott; easily the best book I've read on him; hasnt got an axe to grind and addresses the unfounded lies told my several little men over the years; obviously having walked the walk (literally) Fiennes has a much more accurate view of conditions/decisions etc compared to other 'armchair' explorers.
I'm going to reread the Song of Ice & Fire novels next assuming I dont faint in disbelief at the prospect of a new one being released.

Just read The Affinity Bridge by George Mann - it was entertaining enough, but hasnt left much of an impression.
Now moving onto The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder, which is taking a while to warm up.
I am also leafing through the Steampunk Bible which is thus far both gloriously presented and factually interesting.

Ghosts of Manhattan... It's fantastic and tells Rocket Packs like they really are (well that's not all it does, but it doesn't gloss over some of the practical difficulties of them  ) I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm hoping George Mann does an author talk/Q&A some day. Righto - stocked up on books for my two weeks off in Queensland doing nothing but lounging about reading and possibly reef fishing if the weather is good.

Plus we bought the latest and supposedly last 'Clan of the Cave Bear' epic.

I just finished the post-apocalyptic "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.
I read each of the books in "The Hunger Games" series in succession, each in one day, respectively. I couldn't put them down! I love evil futuristic government books.... I'm currently reading a bunch of different Steampunk novels that I downloaded for free to my Nook...some are just, well, BAD. Others I was very surprised at how entertained I was and was sorry that they weren't longer. Gaslight Chronicles: "Phantoms and Photographs" by Cindy Spencer Pape is a good one "The Strange Case of Finely Jayne" was pretty damn good, by Kady Cross. That book was only 78 pages, but I think if given the chance, it could have made a really good thriller. |

L.Neil Smith's "Henry Martyn" sorta steampunky, Alt History far future, peice - star pirates, sailing starships, nasty gov'ments ,lost tech,and a love/ coming of age story all scrambled together and done to a turn, a very tasty litarary omelette. miles

Moab is my Washpot, Stephen Fry's autobiography, part one. It's a very interesting book, and it's becoming increasingly clear that I like autobiographies and factual books far more than stories. Except for fairytales.
