It's Heinrich Rudolf Hertz's birthday. Let us all give him a wave or two. Didn't he invent the car rental company back in the '60's? I think you're confusing him with Hertz Van Rental..who played in goal for Holland in the 1970 World Cup

I had assumed that this was the reason for the 'Today is also the day the phrase:"Houston, we have a problem", was made.' comment underneath it. But I may have been reading too much into it.

Me too. Though it being the 107th Anniversary of the first Little Nemo seems to show that absolutely any excuse to make that animation was enough to justify it. Not that it needed justifying as far as I'm concerned. The most expensive book I have ever bought was the complete colour Little Nemo reproductions, it is one of the major loves of my life. And it turns out that someone has scanned it and uploaded it to the eternally wonderful archive.org. So if you don't know Little Nemo, do yourself a favour and settle down for an hour or two with this.

Don't know if everyone is getting today's 'Google Doodle' (as I believe they are called) celebrating Ada Lovelace who was an English mathematician and writer chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. Because of this, she is often considered the world's first computer programmer.

I saw that one too! I followed the link on the last page to the UK Google site (not really daring to hope that the robot game was still up) and lo and behold, there was the doodle! Cool. You know, in a mere three years it will be Ada's two hundredth birthday. We should collectively try and do something to mark the occasion--Maybe storm the Computer Science 101 class at the local college, and present them a framed picture of Ada? Or just, y'know, reread the archives of The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage! Or something.

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

Still think that there should be a part on the logo that if you click it, it will take you to a picture of a certain well-known tube station. Would be a good one for them to do sometime, perhaps in connection to either the original show, or another event for the tube.
