Is the Asylum race official? There are forms to fill out to make it so if no-one has done that yet. May I also request a number? Another Death Scooter seems off the table so I thought I'd have a go at a Rocket Pack instead, that sounds much safer

Race number 12 is now on its way to llama492, leaving 13 to 25 available (and those who have received a number know they get more than just the number in their rocketeer racer induction envelope...)
MAY I REQUEST A NUMBER? WHAT'S THE FORMAT WITH GETTING ONE?

As I am not building a racer or rocket pack, I will do the pdf, and have a chat with Tink hopefully at Dr Geoff's Steampunk Market in Leeds on the 8th October. I warn you now I am having thoughts of a giant comedy fire extinguisher.

I have just finished a scribbling plan of what I want to do, I'll post a link once I get home and scan it.
Does anyone know a good place to get a Back Pack Frame? I'd rather buy one than try to build from scratch

I just used two belts for each of the rocket packs I made. They are attached to a backplate that was welded to the rockets.
Some have used camping frames. A SCUBA backpack would work very nicely.

Gathering materials for my build... Not pictured is the rucksack that I'll be stripping down for its frame.

Materials List
Back Pack Frame Small Water Barrel Brass Shower Cable Medium Pressure gauge Wood Mounted Themomator 2 x lemonade bottles 2 x metal funnel BAttery powered candle/flickering light Radiator coil
Tools Hacksaw Hot Melt Glue Gun Screwdrivers screws Brass upholstary nails Electric Drill Dremel Spray paint - Black, Sliver, Copper, Brass, Clear/Varnish
Work in progress, I may add things as I think of them. I hope there will be some numbers left when I can eventually start building. I have a wedding to pay for before I can run out and stock up on the few supplies I don't have. Unfortunatly, they are the more expensive ones on the list.

Mwuah ha ha ha ha!
Yes folks - number 13 sits on my desk awaiting the next picture posted on this thread of a completed rocket pack.
We do still have 14 to 25 to issue after that.
And I can commission a second batch to take us up to 50.
MORE ROCKET PACKS!!!

Wow - great work there Andrew,
I do like the second drawing,
I could see that as an airbrushed image on the side of my rocket pack.
I could do something for you if you like...I do intend to do more of these smaller versions of the Vampyre Valkyries. The idea is that they are not uniform so they will have varied designs of cat suits, armour, helmet and aparatus etc.

Some of you gents may remember my post earlier in this thread of my rocket-powered glide pack design. Well, I've started gathering parts and working out the wing mechanisms. Here are a couple of in-progress shots. As a refresher, here's the concept art: And here's the current prototype: If I can get everything working, it should look really badass. Especially with my Batman: 1889 costume!

Thanks muchly! These wing spars are cardboard. They're just prototypes to make sure the mechanism will work before I commit to wood (or more likely hardboard).

That's kind of how NASA got started.
Apparently, they had two Pringles packs and a cotton reel.
Anyone else seeing the makings of some sort of game here?

Especially with my Batman: 1889 costume! Your original post about a rocket powered glider has had me thinking along the the same lines. Have you puzzled out how to lift and drop the wings yet? I'm thinking a simple cable pull to lift mine, and letting gravity drop them back down. Among my bits and pieces I have a pair a levers that were originally intended to raise and lower the blade deck of riding lawn mowers. They have a good bit of travel and lock into several positions so they should allow me to work each wing independently to preform banking maneuvers and such should I ever have an opportunity to compete in one of the proposed foot races.

I think I have. That's part of the purpose of these cardboard spars, to check and see if I'm as blindingly brilliant as I think I am Everything will be run off a single motor. The large, half-gears on the wings will mesh together in the final design (obviously, the current ones were a little too small). Meshed with one of them will be the drive gear. On that drive gear will be two stacked pulleys. If you look closely on the outermost spar on each side, you may be able to make out a small hole on the top tip and one just below the spar pivot. A cord will run from the top one around and down to one of the pulleys to open the wings. The lower hole will have a stiff wire loop (coat-hanger or the like) running from it to the long slot on the main wing spar. What you can't see here is that there's a hole running all the way from that slot out the base of the main spar near the kink. There will be a cord tied around the base of the wire loop, running down that hole and out to the second pulley where it will be wound counter to the first. Both will be kept tight, countering each other. If I lay everything out properly, the length of travel of each cord will be the same. As the drive motor turns the drive gear and pulleys, the main spars will open up and out together and the upper cord will be drawn in as the lower cord is payed out at the same rate, allowing the secondary spars to open smoothly at the same time. Reverse the motor and the opposite happens. The lower cord will pull on the wire loop, pulling the outer spar in at the same time as the main spars are folding downwards. The middle spar will simply be attached to the canvas wing material and free to swing. Fairly simple, really, but requiring some precision. It will also require a bit of torque. I'm thinking of gutting a cheap shredder for the motor and gearbox as they're already designed to reverse and have been geared down for high-torque. I can run it off a 12 volt trolling motor battery and cheap automotive DC-to-AC inverter. Not perfect, but the cheapest solution I've come up with so far. The next question will be if I can keep the secondary spars from fouling on the frame or reaction chamber as the wings open. Hmmm......
