I've heard mention of Confederate jungle brigades or such and such. In my head, I've something that's a mix between the Terrans of Starcraft mixed with Catachans of 40k.
I wonder, fellows, if certain cues might be taken from the Zouave units? Not that the latter idea has anything to do with the former. Just to say, we oughn't to ignore the Zouaves. They'd lovely wee vests.

A Confederate Jungle Brigade actually does make some sense. Many Confederate families fled the newly restored Untied States of America after the Civil War and headed even further south. South America to be exact. http://www.patsabin.com/lowcountry/confederados.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_colonieshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ConfederadosPerhaps this is where most of that lost Confederate gold ended up???

It's been some time since I've posted here but I have not be sitting completely idle by. Here is an example of what I have so far. The idea is artillery/ordinance but since I haven't built a cannon or gun-carriage as of yet I went with the rifle. A little closer to the goggles. And goggles down.

I cannot lie, there was a bit of inspiration on the part of good Othar. As was a dash of Battlestar Galactica. It didn't hurt that I don't remember having seen many other peoples goggle designs with this "mail slot" lens set up.

I like that outfit. Thank you! Pieced together over time, still getting things together. It's a work in progress and there's plenty left to do/make. By the "mechanism" I'm guessing you mean the arms for the goggles? If so, then you'll be happy to know that in a week or so, I'll be posting how I made them on my "general method for goggle making" thread in the tactile section. Arvis

Very nice pics D.Oakes! I also enjoyed the Dorian Gray shoot you did.
Just curious, does anyone posting here take part in American Civil War Reenacting?
I apoligize if this has already been asked.

Always wanted to but it's an expensive and time involved hobby. So in my case no. I would like to do some photo shoots like Mr. Oaks but what I want to do is going to involve at least one other collaborator. I believe I missed D.Oaks Dorian Gray shoot, would someone please send me a link?

That was indeed my meaning, sir. I assume the arms are spring-loaded or in some other fashion allow the goggles to be pulled forward over the brim of the kepi? In any case I look forward to your tutorial!

Thank you on both counts. I am considering doing ACW as a Confederate. Most of the kit I know how to make and working at the National Civil War Museum I have no excuse not to work off original examples. http://dannyoakesart.deviantart.com/gallery/ Here is my Deviant Art gallery that has three....or scroll down near the bottom: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,25161.400.htmlTruthfully I got fed up with having to rely on models (finding them, convincing them, clothing them....etc) so I just started working on doing everything myself. I have some new project ideas which I will need others for....just going to have to go about finding others.

Oh it's "on" now! I think you have just inspired me to get off my duff and start my own Deviant art account now. (it's gonna take a while to get some props in order though) Thanks for the links!

I would like to make an confederate-style (inspired?) military costume. Something like an airship officer. I have some old sketch i did long time ago of a jacket, wich I would like to turn into a real jacket. Hat: I had some little experience with sewing of hat, but almost none with sewing of a Visor-hat. I like the visor hat wich is in the beginning of the 2005 movie, Sahara. I don't know if it is a reproduction of an issued hat or something they made up for the movie, but I like it and I would like to get some pattern to sew it. I have a USAAF visor hat, but the pattern is different. If anyone know where to get this pattern it would help me a lot. Jacket: As I said before, I would like to base the jacket on some sketch I did before. I havnť decided yet if I would make the jacket single breasted or double brested. The colour would be dark grey, with gold piping and gold/brass buttons. Trousers: Trouser would be riding pants (the pattern will be based on NVA breeches) in dark blue color, well, maybe union blue, with red piping. I have black czechoslovak riding boots that i will use with them. Belt and accesories: I will use the czechoslovak sam-brown belt, with both the traditional shoulder strap, and the rare x-type shoulder straps/harness. under the belt I will wear some kind of blue and red scarf? Sherpa? I don't know the exact english word for it. Some kind of sword and revolver (non firing replica) for airship battle. Any recomendation for tornister pattern? I have several czechoslovak breadbags and backpacks, while they are qualitly made, I would like to make something different, something that would not look so central-european.

The hat looks like a variation on the Mexican War-era M1839 Forage Cap worn by all the services with variations being worn by "normal" people, police, and fire departments. It sometimes referred to as a "wheel" hat. Again there were many variations, some more detailed than others, do a quick google search. It has a higher "body" than most modern visor caps and a smaller crown. The visor itself is easily attached from the bottom, no folding necessary, cut the shape you want out of leather or painted canvas and sew it in straight down. I do have experience sewing similar visor caps. If you have any visor cap handy, have a look at the construction and adjust, very little as far as the nuts and bolts go has changed.

Thanks D.Oakes for pointing me into the right direction. After a little bit of googling the M1839 pattern i have found some nice pictures that resemble the hat in the movie. I am currently working out the sewing pattern and will do a prototype of it soon. Thank you again very much.

You are welcome. They were quite popular early in the war. Stonewall Jackson apparently wore one for a short time. The Navies on both sides continued to use them throughout.

I already noticed of your cap in your other thread. A nice hat as always Myself, I am in a stage of finishing the prototype from white cloth wich was laying around in my house. It wasn't as hard to make as i though it would be. After I'll finish it I'll post photos of it .

Don't say it was not hard to make.....then the manufacturer I mentioned on the other thread will lose money from telling people that they require such absolute precision that a computerized system is necessary. Yes, pictures please! Feel free to put them on "my thread" as well.
