Just keep your conflict out of the West. We out here take a dim view of those shenanigans and don't cotton well to piracy either, and the Pan-Pacific Combined Air Guard will give you bounders a good dressing down if you decide to play in our backyard. I know a few Steampunk Indians....

Thanks for the "heads up" Mr. Crow. Indeed I'm in the market as I'm not talented enough to stitch up one of my own. I've been doing a lot of "window shopping" here as of late. http://www.fcsutler.com/fcusuniforms.aspAnother excellent site, albeit more expensive: http://www.ushist.comExcellent uniforms and go beyond the Civil War in either direction. Sorry fellas, I can't join the frey except in my background past story. The alternate timeline for my character, Admiral Wilhelm is in the Reconstruction Era. But it has it's origins in the Civil War. The United States Airship Orca (Formerly the CSAA Alamo) was my prize as a younger captain when I won the Franco-American aerial battle over the Sonoran desert between the US Forces/ Mexican President Juarez' forces vs. CSA Forces / France/ Emperor Maximilian forces. By the way, unless you think you can shoot well into the statosphere don't try any funny stuff against my ship! Cheers, J. Wilhelm USAS Orca.

It's amazing what one can do with a bomb sight, some altitude and a pocket full of ball bearings.

I don't suppose they let themselves be thrown overboard. Is this like "walking the plank?" I prefer my brussel sprouts. Much easier to pick up and point.

"Tredegar" was the largest iron works in the South. They cast artillery, made armor (armour to our British friends) plate for ironclads, cannon balls & shells, boiler parts, etc. Never heard of a Tredegar "rifle" (unless it was a rifled artillery piece) but their iron & steel was probably used in small arms manufacturing.

Indeed they should.(yer tie is crooked there general) Joking aside, that is a niiiiiiice outfit. Working on mine right now as are a couple of others here. I too am assembling mine for artillery though I am working more towards the NCO side of things. Did you make yours or was it bought. If bought, who are your resources? Please elaborate! Arvis

General, your uniform indicates the rank of Lieutenant General. Does the red color indicate artillery, as in the US uniforms? I often wonder, if Black is staff (For US all generals are "staff"), Artillery is red, Cavalry is yellow, Infantry is blue... What would be the color for an Airship Command / Air Force? White? I need to dilucidate that before I put together my Admiral Uniform! (My reference is the www.ushist.com wardrobe website under the US Officers uniform sections). JW

Looks like I made a boo-boo in regards to Renegade's rank on his uniform. It seems that he is in fact wearing the rank of colonel. (Pictures of Robert E. Lee shows he wore the same collar insignia as colonel) "General" in the Confederate Army has a wreath around the three stars. I should have looked closer at the sleeve braids which would have alerted me to the true nature of the rank. In my defense I was in a hurry when I posted that comment. Mr. Wilhelm, I'm a bit confused. Are you basing your uniform on a Union or a Confederate uniform? Because yes there are a lot of similarities but there are also a lot of differences too. As far as color goes, I have wondered about that myself. In regards to the Confederate Navy Jack, I would simply invert the colors. Red Bars on a blue field. That being said I would probably go with Navy rank and insignia for Air Force/Aeronautical personnel. Arvis

Mr. Arvis: I have no choice but to be Union, as my character's use of the USAS Orca and the discovery of the Teuthididae borealis and Micropanthera leo take place during the Reconstruction Era (The alternate timeline starts at the end if the American Civil War). I was basing the colors and insignia on the US uniform catalogue at the www.ushist.com website.... EDIT: I was checking the website again. They have both insignia standard for US and CS. Red fields on insignia indicate artillery for both US and CS. Similar confluence for Cavalry-Yellow, Staff-Black, and Infantry-Blue (actually two shades of Blue for CS... I don't know why). Earlier, I was just comparing to a reproduction of one of Lee's uniforms I saw; The uniform above is similar to one worn by Gral. Lee in 1862, but no colors were present on the collar of Lee's uniform, according to the website (they call it Lee's "Booted and Spurred" uniform). Only a four-row sleeve braid indicates the rank of General, given that a CS-style wreath, like you said, is missing around the stars on the insignia. In contrast, US colonels get no stars and an Eagle instead (as stars are reserved for Brigadier General, Major General, Lt Genetal, and General of the Army ranks).

Sorry for the late reply, currently jobhunting and avoiding rioters The uniform was bought I'm afraid rather than made. It was actually for a ball with my (medieval) re-enactment group that had several proper Confederates in attendance (look, we like lots of periods, ok!), I just decided I wanted more interesting colours. The red is for artillery, and chosen primarily as its my favourite colour and the maker had a great shade available. Colonel as I figure I'm only going to get older . Brown as I originally asked her to try a butternut (thinking a late war uniform would be a nice alternative and usable for re-enactment), but she pulled out that cloth explaining the difference between brown and butternut to one of the guys going for grey and I fell in love with it. Aside: Our resident blacksmith one-upped everyone Group shot

Since my husband is a southerner and I am a northerner -- and we met in Chicago -- I've made up a story about how he went to Chicago to engage in industrial espionage for the confederates. But they sent him far too late and the war ended. The people he was spying on liked him so much they gave him a raise and promotion so he stayed while Atlanta sorted itself out.
I've never actually needed to use that story though since my husband doesn't really participate in steampunk!

What an intriguing thread....
Being from the South (now living in the North), I can see the appeal of this idea... and yes I have read most of the Turtledove books with intrigue....
However instead of having participated in the "affairs" of the war... My relatives were actually correspondents for the Charleston Mercury and reported on the events of the day...
now you have my mind wondering about Steampunk correspondent...
Hmm......
