I've apparently been here long enough to advance one rank, but what does this mean? How many more ranks have I got left? Can I lose a rank if I do something stupid? Is rank related to post count?

Hi the ranks go up depending on how much active time you lave logged in and after the first rank up they are pretty much decoration.  The first rank is part of one of our anti spam bot tools. (and man do we ever need it.  We get waves of those little bugs sometimes.)  I am sure someone has a list of ranks but I can't remember what the other are and I think when I got mine it was running on another system.  I can remember if you can loose them either with the new set up.  Sorry I could not be more helpful.

It seems to be a combination of how many posts, how often and how many boards...
Don't hold me to that though. It just that I went up 2 ranks in as many weeks by posting across more boards more often.

And I have dropped a rank before just by not posting for a while (went from gunner back down to deck hand) so as far as I'm aware that is still possible.

A lot of people moved down a rank with the latest change. User ranks used to be determined solely by post count. This encouraged postwhoring (of which I myself was also guilty, mind you). To combat these pointless posts, the new system was put in place, which relies on time spent actively browsing the forum. This means you can gain ranks even as a lurker..

You can't really get demoted, unless the ciiteria are changed again, in which case it's nothing personal anyhow as it would affect everyone the same. Really dumb behavior will be corrected with the Banhammer.. Smiley

Yeah, Akumabito is right... people lost ranks (such as you Corsair) but not for being inactive, that was just when the system changed. I actually gained a rank then because I hadn't posted much but had lurked a lot.
To OP, the highest rank you can get is two golden cogs which is Immortal. There are only about five people with this I think, and you have to have some 120 days online (don't hold me to that).

Well, the ranks are there.. doesn't really say how much time you need to spend around here to get to the next level.. Rogue Aetherlord is 85 days online then? Immortal is 120 days I think.. don't know for the other ranks..

Zeppelin Admiral is somewhere around 22/23 days, if I recall correctly.  It's for 500 hours online... hence why I thought myself due to progress a rank when I hit 1000 hours a few months ago  Embarrassed

Zeppelin captain is 250 hours (10 days 10 hours)
Perhaps we should make a sticky thread that has each rank and how long you need to be online to attain it.

That's really awesome that the ranks are based on time spent on the forums and not on number of posts.  A lot of the time I really enjoy reading what people have to say, but I'm not too talkative myself.

You can partly earn them. The orange single gear denotes being online for a really long time and reaching the top of the user ranks as far as I remember. The yellow however is for mods and such.

I really do need to get around to writing a FAQ... Smiley

I just wanted to point out that you don't generally lose rank, but if people start lording their rank over others, admins can... repair that issue.  Grin   Ranks are just for fun, and don't really mean anything -- except the "gold gears" which indicate moderator/governor/admin status.  Those ranks are commissioned, not time-based.

Rogue Ætherlord and Immortal get orange gears. I still wonder why I lost my Rogue Ætherlord status with the change to time based ranks.

Orange is for two levels, as explained by others above.

There aren't that many Immortals.  If it becomes much more common to have Immortal status, I'll probably see what we can come up with beyond that.

Hmmm, just noticed the next rank up from Immortal is Master Tinkerer. Apparently access privileges to the Dok's steam harem is restricted to a still higher level, bummer. markf
