Not to steal the thunder of other genius on this board i have staved off posting this new contraption, it shares a similarity with Mr Lait’s Time-Viewing Monoggle. But rest assured, no plagiarising has occured. I started building this a while back for my ex girlfriends halloween costume. have had some time to finish it up, and this is how its looking! its mostly brass, some parts had to be painted brass, im very happy with how it came out. looks so much better in person,photography is not my forte! oh well. enjoy. a scientific instrument from a past that wasnt..     the red material is some old leather i had in my material pile, the peices were collected from various locations. the eye peices itself has a working iris, the clock work motor is inert, so its still assemblage art. but i enjoyed making it. as i mentioned before, this was for my ex girlfriend, who broke up with me a few days ago, and WONT be getting this. i need to move out of our house and so, like all my work..its for sale on ebay! woohoo! ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190137421468alex x |

is that one of those earbud headphone winder case things used for the clockwork?
Also shame you have to sell it, if i had the cashsuch an amazing peice i would merely display it.

no, i dont think so,its metal and was really old and broken, had to fix it up, no plastic on this. |

you tried arranging tiny cogs without a knowledge of clockwork! i tried, failed miserably, hence why im learning. id like all these things to move, but the time and effort isnt warranted at the moment, and thus this will remain inert art for the forseeable future. once i sort out my studio, ill try again x |

I think that little case was probably a compass cover at one time. Yeah clockworks are damn-nigh impossible without some serious precision instruments. I tried with the laptop lid, but gave up very quickly. The slightest bit of flex in the lid made the gears slip or jam!

Yeah, you need both enough end-shake for the arbors and enough rigidity in the plates to prevent binding. American kitchen clocks are known for having plates that bow in and can rob power from the movement in just such a manner. It is common to have to "adjust" such plates, which usually involves a vise and not having the clock's owner present due to the operations indelicacy. Now if I could just figure out what is robbing power from that stupid grandfather clock movement life would be better....
For the laptop mod, a bit more slop in the pivots might have helped, but unless the laptop lid is rigid enough you're asking for difficulties.

That is a really cool creation. I'd agree that having some sort of device, bluetooth, MP3 player headphone, etc. would make it a *little more functional, but honestly, works of art (like most stuff you do) don't need the "functionality" aspect, they astound enough with the simply with their looks.
