I'm currently in rather protracted venue discussions... Hope to have more news very soon...

Hi,

This would be great, is there any chance of it being held at a weekend? If your protracted venue discussions are already past this point please disregard the question.

I thought steampunks in or near birmingham interrested in swapping things might like to know (if you dont already) there's a monthly swap shop in moseley at the prince edward on every fourth saturday from 12pm-5pm (yep. thats next saturday). Everything is free, and you might get something nice to use as a base/mod/cut up and use for the fabric. Also, people swap old brik brak and books.
I know about it as my sister is involved in running it and is quite clear that she needs lots of people to turn up and take stuff away.

Notes- thanks.

Do you have a link, please, or more details on the venue?

certainly didn't know about any such thing in Moseley- is that instead of the vintage fairs that were on...? Thanks for the info!

With regards to a venue for this, I'm STILL in negotiations wit the same venue... i was hoping for a central B'ham location as I imagine many may be travelling by public transport, and although it's well served by buses, there's no station in Moseley... But it may certainly work if I can't get a free venue. If your sister would be interested in a steampunk style swap, all the better!

Hi,

Its run by birmingham friends of the earth and there page about it is here:
http://www.birminghamfoe.org.uk/waste-recycling-news/the-moseley-swap-shop
There's a facebook group here:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=339044856945&ref=ts
The venue is a nice pub on the moseley high street called the prince of wales, who have there very own website, on which they've decided to put information on their location under the contact us tab: http://theprincemoseley.co.uk/

the swap shop is ussualy held in the garden, and there's a reassuring big black board saying swap shop in front of it on the day it runs.

And just to avoid confusion, This isn't a particular steampunk event, just somthing I thought steampunks around birmingham might like to know about. Everyone is welcome along with any eccentricities Smiley
Hope thats helpful

Hi Governess,

Apologies for not responding to the "would my sister be interested in a steampunk style swap?" question.
I only just read to the end of your post, this is my embarresed type face

If your free on saturday, go along and ask, at a guess yes but i'd hate to promise anything. Your looking out for brown dreads stretchers and she's called beth (i'll warn her you'll be coming if you'd like) oh or contact her through fb
Its possible i'll be there (i'm called Kate) on saturday too, brown hair, likely to be sewing somthing

I hope thats helpful

Oh! I may be rather interested in this, I've been dressing a little less steakpunishly lately & have a few waistcoats that are not entirely my size, however they are at my parents so it all depends if I have a chance to get down to London or not... Plus it's far too long since I last ambled along to an event...

Blast.  I'm in Birmingham on the 22nd but not in that part of Birmingham.  Rather, shewing some coursemates around on a whistlestop tour of Victorian & Edwardian civic architecture in the city  Undecided

Ms Fisher, many thanks, I'll have a look at the links and see if I can get on Saturday... i'm in Kings Heath, so very close...

James, 26th Feb is the date I're got pencilled in for the steampunk swap (which coincidentally may also be the date of the Feb swap in Moseley), if that suits you any better...

But if you need an excuse to go to Moseley to look at buildings, there's Highbury Hall, moseley Victorian swimming baths, and Moseley Dovecot to name but three...

Hello all, here's the latest update.

I met with the lovely Ms Fisher and equally lovely sister today at the Moseley swapshop.  Thanks for your time, advice and info (please pass on to Beth also!).

The Moseley swapshop has a nice, friendly indoor venue, and lots of stuff.  Sadly, what it doesn't have much of at this time of year is space - at the moment, it's being held in a small room at the back of the pub.

While having a joined up event would be lovely - getting a big influx of steampunks would most likely swamp the place.  So a joined up event may be better later on in the year, when it's being held outdoors under a marquee, rather than in February...

I have (I think) obtained a city centre venue for the 26th Feb, very close to the train station.  It has a nice big private space upstairs.  We wouldn't have our own bar person, but can get drinks at the downstairs bar and bring them.  We'd also need to be out by 1600, as there's an evening do already booked.

The down side is they want a deposit, and a minimum bar spend of £150.

So the only way this venue is feasible (as much as I like you lovely people, I don't have the resources to fork out that much for you to swap clothes!) is if we are definitely able to say we'll get enough people to meet that minimum spend...

If not:  I can look for a smaller venue, or if our numbers are very few, I can see if a one-off merger with the Moseley swapshop is the best option.

So please - stand up and be counted - if you're interested, can you make it B'ham city centre for the afternoon of Saturday 26th feb?

Why don't we all chip in some cash, put it behind the bar and then drink what we like when we get there until the money is up? I personally am a teetotaller but if they do food I would be more than interested!

I'm in, wholeheartedly. Matt, too, will be along- for the social side more than the apparel (he says... bet he comes away with more than I do) so there's a significant bar spend already.

Is there a FB "event" for this? If not, want me to set one up?

I'm going to set one up on the British Steampunk Community group, but it would be good to cross reference it on the WM assembly group too...

Darkshines, yes they do food. Putting the money behind the bar is an idea, but i'd probably need to put £150 behind in advance any way, so would actually have to pay out more up front...

Someone also suggested a token entry fee, but I'm very reluctant to impose specific costs for this, as it was born out of some of us discussing having no spare readies for clothes; and with people paying to travel too, I don't want it to be prohibitive.

I'm hoping people will pop along for a chat as much as anything else...

... and I've now created an event on Facebook...

and also stuck it on the WM SP assembly wall.

just to note, if cost is an issue you may be able to get cheaper (but slower) train journeys between B'ham and London via Chiltern Railways or London Midland.

Chiltern is nicer, get off at B'ham Moor St, and it's only about 5mins further away than new street.

Do you need any clothes rails? I've got 2 I can bring, possibly 2 more if they fit in the car. (Plus a mirror, something that often seems to be overlooked at vintage clothes fairs Huh)
