Well Greetings Ms. LaBryn.
Interior B.C. is somewhat of a Waste Land in more ways than one; hardly anyone there, except my good lady wife, shares any of my interests. I don't belong there; I'd leave for the B.C.coast (one place on the planet where I feel somewhat at home) in an instant if I could, but for various reasons that's not possible.
I won't be back in Canada until April next year, but, in the meantime, PM me if you feel like it. I might make it to the Victoria Steam Exposition in April, but I can't be certain.
Athanor

Yeah, I'm having a helluva time finding any fellow geeks. I know they're out there, but they hide really well. Standing out from the norm isn't necessarily a good thing in the Bible belt, especially if you're still in school, alas. I'd love to go to the Victoria Steam Expo but I'm not sure I'll even still be in BC; we ought to be moving out to Kingston to join my Airforce husband there sometime this coming year but none of us are sure exactly when that will be, which makes planning things hard. Plus there's the kids... I am hoping to take them and their SP outfits and anyone else who is interested up to Barkerville for the May long weekend for their annual Victoria Day Tea with the Queen. If I can find about four more people, we can take over one of the in-town historical hotels for about $30/person(/bed). IIRC that even includes breakfast! If you're back in BC, would you and your good lady be interested in such a venture? I've got one other friend already lined up for it, and even if we end up just camping out instead of staying in style, I think it would be great fun to visit there in a group in our full regalia!

Good thing I backed up & read the last couple of pages - I was sure my inability to place a pin on the booming metropolis of Killeen Texas was the computer outsmarting me, again. Glad I was wrong - or at least in good company

Ah yes, living in the B.C. Bible Belt, just a barrel o' laughs...... This far ahead, I can't make any definite plans for the May long weekend...... and our camping days are definitely over!!!! - but I really like Barkerville, a sort of Steampunk/Wild West abandoned mining town - I was there about 30 years ago, before it became so touristy; it really was a Ghost Town back then. I worked as a mining geologist and prospector for many years, so I became familiar with abandoned towns and mining camps all over B.C. and the Yukon. Athanor

It must have been about 30 years since I was there myself, but I was about 10 at the time (maybe a wee bit older) so my perceptions will probably have been a bit off. But I do remember that the theatre was there and doing shows, and the Chinese restaurant was there (which I remember because my brother and I wanted to eat there and we went somewhere else, lol), and at least a couple of stores (a general store and a souvenir shop I can specifically remember), along with the gold sluice at the end of the town. I honestly don't remember now if every building was open or not, but there were a fair number of tourists about even then (although not too many costumed interpreters). In any case, it sounds like it's a pretty happenning place these days, and I figure a great place for a bunch of Steampunkers to go and take in the sights!

I was there in the winter, which might have skewed the situation (and my perceptions) a bit..... I remember we stayed at a motel in Wells, as apparently nothing much was open in B'ville, but a fascinating place nonetheless.
Athanor.
So, apropos of the main purpose of this thread, since our map is apparently fossilized, is there any chance of some other way of finding out where we are?

Its not that hard, I made one for the Edinburgh Steampunk Society earlier and if I had time free now I could do another but I ought to be getting to bed.

Actually, the map-per-country/continent idea sounds like a really good one, and a good way to get around that pin limit on the free maps. Maybe we can keep this one as an archive, and do up ones for the countries/regions that have people already there? Like Canada, the US, England... Can we do Europe as one map or does that need to be broken down further too? If it gets really crowded we can do East/West Canada/US, but if it took this long to hit that pin limit in the current map we probably don't need to. Sadly I can't crate maps myself and I'm about to run out the door. But I'd vote for multiple maps, if we're voting. I guess we have to do something. It's a great tool for helping those of us out in the boonies find others-- if we can stick a pin in.

Aren't there other (free) map pinning websites? What about something with Google Earth? I'm not shure how to, but I guess there is someone who knows.

I seem to remember a site I passed through (sorry can't remember the name) had a rotating globe with 'pins' in for the locations of those logged in. I'm guessing that this was done in some flavour of java but that's just a guess. Something like but listed by country might be a way to go.

B*gger, I've just realised one can't un-pin and relocate when one moves about, so I'll be stuck at this spot until Map Mk.3.

Placed 2 markers; one for West Kelowna, B.C. where I live April-October, and one for La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico, where I live the rest of the year. I know, it's confusing....
It confuses the hell out of me sometimes, I can tell you.....

From what I have been able to work out, the maps only allow a maximum of 500 markers.

Just pinned our Treehouse to the new map. Delighted to find that our Library is already a part of the map! You'll find the beginnings of our catalog here on LibraryThing : http://tinyurl.com/3bbywwjThrew most of the books up on the shelves, all higgledy-piggledy, just in time for the Twins' Fourth Birthday ( needed the floor space ). We hope to sort and catalog all of the books soon.
