I'm thinking that if you could have a sort of renaissance-situation, it could work pretty well. A future society where propriety and etiquette had become forgotten was suffering the consequences. When looking back at mankind's history the Victorian era becomes idealized as the peak of human society, creating a new movement in art, fashion and ideology.

A sort of resistance against an increasingly artificial world makes people retake interest in mechanics and other, more "hands-on" directions of technology. With the technological advances made since Victorian times, the limits of mechanics and clockworks are expanded way beyond what they once were.

Just like the Greek philosophers, athletes and artists became iconic during the renaissance, Queen Victoria, Nikola Tesla and other celebrities of the time become idealized. Following in the steps of these role-models of the past, the world begins to change. This would justify a sort of neo-Victoriana, which could also be pitted against the cyber/nano-conservatives like the renaissance-man vs. the church.

Interesting.    i could allways just have different provinces in diff eras.    one province is way ahead in technology, another is victorian, and another rules with a iron fist as a king.

Then ppl can choose wherever they want to be and how they want to live.
