Well, if you've a bit of small gears to go with them you can make a little... er... big mechanical art project what sits on a table... in a corner... wherever.
Otherwise you can use them as attachments to other art projects or just hang them on a wall in a nifty fashion.

Wow, I wouldn't hang them above eye level then. Might break something if they fall off the wall.
You can always sell them on Ebay or someplace else for people who need printing press replacement parts. Not that there are that many I'm sure.
50 lbs is a lot of weight. I can't think of anything that they could be used for, except for their original purpose.

That gives me some interesting thoughts... My stepdad works in construction crane replacement parts, and since he scraps old cranes, he must come across broken parts... Perhaps it would be in my interests to try to get back into contact with him..?

How about bases for floor lamps or standing sculptures? 50 pounds would make a nice base for something!

Could you please post a photo of the gears with a ruler for scale? I'm sure that would provide some inspiration.

What he's describing sounds like it'd need a yard stick.

Crane parts would be excellent for pulleys and possibly gears, depending on the type of crane and whether it uses wires or hydraulics.
I didn't think of the tables or stands. Those would both be excellent. Especially shined up with a glass top or something similar.

1. upload the picture file to for example www.imageshack.us2. Copy the image location 3. Begin a new post 4. Click the Insert image icon (this one: ) 5. paste the image url in between the tags. 6. Click 'post'. (or 'preview' of course if you want to make sure you got it right ) Edited to add:Ah, you worked it out. Good job!

My dear Mr. Catchpole, Clearly these are of no use or value and I would recommend giving them to me immediately to clear them out of your way Seriously, bases for floor lamps or depending on diameter, bases for a trio of end tables. Perhaps standing two of them on end (as pictured) on a base and attaching a table top to the tops for a coffee table. Very cool pieces! JIT

Or you could arrange the three gears flat on the floor in a triangle or straight line. Add pipes for leg posts, and bolt some wood or glass on top of the posts for a table. Those gears would provide some serious ballast for even a larger table. Be sure to wear your steel toe boots around them though. Quite a risk of toe knuckle busting.

JIT ha ha well of i will do that right away (not) but you will have to pay the shipping on these, and i correct myself they are closer to 100lbs then to 50lbs

the coffee table idea
And if your design does not requite that the axle holes be entirely filled in you can even sit some kind of wonderful ornaments inside them. How does an ornate clock, or some glasswork sound to you?
