Like "Deck Hand", "Gunner", etc. How do they work?

It's based on the actual amount of time you spend contributing on the Forums.

However, they mean very little apart from indicating to new arrivals who the sad gits with nothing better to do actually are. Grin

You can look at the member list sorted by seniority or post count or something, and you'll be able to find all of them.

Ahh, there are a few exceptions.
A while ago there was a bit of a fund raising drive for brass goggles and a few people donated sums of money.

Some Ranks were awarded in accordance with money donated.
Purchasing commission has long been recognised as a perfectly legitimate method of promotion.

I believe one or two very generous people were offered a rank akin to demigod.

I believe there was mention of this before and there are certain 'protections' to stop that. Long periods of inactivity may negate the time recorded.

Anyway, why worry? If you spend enough time here you'll soon get a new rank. I'd personally like to pick my own rank. 'Suspected Deserter' or 'Guerilla Spy' maybe? Grin

Here's a question....

We all have a fair idea of WHAT Steampunk is (within admittedly broad perameters)..

We have a reasonable idea of WHEN the term was coined and of the elements that existed before it was given the name...

But does anyone have a suggestion as to WHY Steampunk happened or why it became, and is still, so popular?

Something along the lines of it being a brain child of the same people who thought up cyberpunk...i think. and it became so popular because we see the steampunk world as a better, simple, and more fantastic way to live; it's a world filled with so much adventure and brilliant madness that everyone make sup upon its glorious essence! *breathes heavily, with a frenzied look in his eyes, then realizes people are looking* ahum...excuse me ^_^

Zeppelin Admirals are allowed into the Rogue Aetherlord Lounge, but only to remove empty dishes and glasses, and we are under strict instructions not to look the Aetherlords in the eye, or to speak to them without being directly addressed.

Steampunk was invented to give steampunks something to do in their spare time. Up till then, all the steampunks had been just milling around, getting in the way and muttering "If only someone would invent a Genre that we like, it would give purpose to our existence." They could be seen peering though the windows at conventions, wailing, 'Oh why is there nothing of interest to us?'
Occasionally, one would be seen despondently pushing a few bits of scrap metal around near a soldering iron, saying. 'If I had a coherent cultural context, I could make this mean something, and bask in the smug glow of aliteration.'

Actually, no, I don't believe they were. The title of "Baron," however, was, and was accepted...it does not appear as "rank," though. The "demi-god" rank, or some such, was considered, but was respectfully declined. I got the "Admiral" under my name the old-fashioned way, by posting and participating. I think the "Brass Goggles Roll of Honour" is still on here somewhere, with the various levels of participating contributors.
