First off I'd like to appologise for taking so long to post this thread and for missing you all at the Robin Hood Beer Festival, but it seems that was a success dispite my absence ( ) and discussion seems to be moving forwards to another Meet up in the near future: We've mooted another meet-up in November, preferably somewhere that sells teas n coffees for those of us unable to take the hard stuff.. thinking about it last night I thought of 2 likely places; the Maltcross or the Bell. Both do teas and coffees late into the evening
Is a Friday evening good for most people? Dates in November could be: 5th... 12th...19th...26th..
I myself vote Maltcross (Infact one of the ladies in the craft shop there got extreamly excited when we mentioned steampunk saying we were the first to mention it there - which suprised me greatly as there are a few pieces of distinctly steampunk jewelry there.) but would be happy with either and fridays are fine for me, and I have at least one friend who is looking forward to coming also. Also for those of you who havent made a note in your calendar is the Wallace and Gromit Steampunk Teaparty at Jamcafe in Hockley on Heathcoat Street Hockley on the 12th of December. Finally, I would also like to take this chance if I may, to say I am very much looking forward to meeting fellow steampunks and hope that this its just the beginning! Lets put Nottingham on the Steampunk Map

It seems the Malt Cross is the popular vote now as to the date... are we picking one at random? 12th? time?..7-7.30? any other offers?

The twelfth works for me as I didn't think before but of course the 5th is Bonfire night. I have a couple of friends that can hopefully make it too. Who else is up for it?

Hiya, not sure who's coming at this point. The Malt Cross says we had better not come 'in fancy costumes' because the bouncers won't let us in.. apparently they have orders to repel any one in fancy dress because of the trouble with stag nights etc. I'll be coming from work and will be there from 5.30, to get some dinner, so will look 'normal' LOL

Isn't it a bit pointless to have a steampunk meet at a venue that may turn people away for expressing themselves as steampunks? There are plenty of other venues. The Salutation for example has welcomed us many times before.

I don't mind the Sal, but there were 2 factors; 1) we wanted somewhere that served tea until late, 2) the Sal has way too crowded when we met up before the Beer fest - upstairs was closed and it was a crush. If anyone has any better ideas - speak up!! personally, my favourite is the dear old Jamcafe, hence them hosting the Tea Party.

My apologies but you misunderstand the point of my post. I am not necessarily advocating the Sal as the appropriate venue merely offering an example as a venue that has always welcomed us regardless of how we dress. The Castle also welcomed us for the Steampunk Belly Dance evening and does tea and coffee until late. They are rather expensive though being a bit of a yuppy pub.
My point which may have got lost slightly is that I think the organisation of a steampunk meet at a venue where we are likely to be turned away by the door staff if we dress as steampunks is logistically bordering on the ridiculous even if they are serving the finest selection of teas for merely thruppence a pot.

I don't disagree with you!! I only found out about this as I popped in today. I'm happy to go with whatever venue people suggest but I have no idea who's actually coming! I'll go the the MC anyway and see what happens - we can always move on..

...and if we try to get in to see you before moving on to another venue and get turned away at the door you could find yourself sitting alone all night assuming noone else made it... Apart from anything else - how are people meant to recognise each other if not 'punked? Sorry to seem like I am picking fault but experience of setting this sort of meet up leads me to the conclusion a rethink is in order. Lady E and I can make the evening but need to be sure we are not making the 70 mile round trip just to miss everyone because we can't get into the venue. (Whilst we live in Notts we are closer to Leeds than Nottingham!)

Well, let's try the Castle then.. it's no hassle to change as long as they serve tea till late Personally, I like the Pit n Pendulum, but after 7 on a Friday night, it's crazy there too. As long as we can agree.. then I'll publicise it LOL.. and I know how tedious that trip is to and from north Notts, I've had to do that journey for several years with work..

My good lady and I may well be free for this, and I'm aware that other Discombobulous crew members are down this way that weekend - I'll see what interest I can generate in our little crew. Re. the venue, everywhere in Nottingham on a Friday night is likely to be rammed, so a quiet tea and a chat might be difficult however things fall

If it's not too late to change pub venues, can I put in a vote for the Victoria hotel on beeston? It's a Camra pub that does excellent food with an upstairs function room that we could conceivably book and they serve tea and coffee well into the night. It's not exactly city centre, but that is part of the charm of it. You normally don't get the usual louts and ne'er do wells in there. It's close to the train station in Beeston, so it's served well by public transport etc. Below is a link to the pub . If people would like memo make a foray into booking the upstairs room out, let me know and I'll give them a tinkle

I'm dissapointed to hear Maltcross feels that way though I still think it may be suitable, if not for now, then for future events. I base this on a number of friends who approached Maltcross as one of many locations in nottingham to host a one day Anime event, this obviously includes costumes. When talk of nottingham events first came up a friend of mine asked there to see if they would be willing to host such a thing and was turned down. The friends who were hosting the anime event since said that Maltcross will only work with more official groups (I assume this is to avoid stag parties and such). Personally I think Maltcross would be idea, its in the city center and unlike most other pubs its not packed to the rafters come evening and doesn't crank up the volume making conversation overly difficult. I think with the backing of the VSS Maltcross would welcome our group with open arms, I think I mentioned on the old thread at least one of the ladies working at the crafts shop there was incredibly excited that we even knew what steampunk was. Theres also the gallery there and I think they would be very foolish to pass up on such an opportunity.

Feel free to approach them as a representative of the VSS and see how we may co-operate with them to create a steampunk friendly venue in Nottingham.
Happy to support such a move provided they are friendly towards steampunks and not trying to exploit us.

Now you're confusing an old lady.. so where are we going to be a week tomorrow? The Vic is just up the road from me so I have no problems with that.. I'm happy for Tajhan to approach the Malt Cross officially..I phoned the Castle today to check they would be OK, but had to leave a message.. just so long as it's sorted soon

Happy with the Vic or the Castle just say which. Perhaps best to write off the MaltCross until we have a firm arrangement with them.

If the Castle have said they are happy with the arrangement then it would be rude to turn them down. I can approach Maltcross in the next few days, depending on their answer its something to discuss at the first meet.
Should we start a facebook event and/or group for this? I know a number of local steampunks who aren't in the habit of checking Brass Goggles.

Yep, I've been posting it up over the last couple of weeks.. I've just spoken to the Castle - they're really happy for us to come dressed up in style! For 20 quid, we could reserve our own space downstairs.. but I'm guessing that would depend on numbers (?) So.. if everyone's happy for it to be the Castle on Friday 12th November 7 to 7.30pm onwards..could someone create an event on the Facebook page please? perhaps the Vic will be the next venue in the new year?

Could put up an event and book the room if we hit a certain amount of people confirmed as Attending 10? 20 perhaps, I havent actually been so I have no idea what sized room it is, though I suppose more to the point is the point when theres too many people to easily sit together.

Posted it on BSC on facebook as an event. Book the room. I am sure that the VSS can sponsor this to the tune of £20. Nice to have our own guaranteed space.
