A metal straight edge is helpful when cutting leather from pattern

Cutting from pattern

If I need to mark the leather I use a pencil and rub the marks off later.

Attach belt loops

Do this sewing first. If you forget and do it last it will be alot harder.

Stitch up sides starting at bottom


Tying up loose ends

I apply drops of melted bees wax in the middle of my square knot. Otherwise the knot will become untyed.

Tools and supplies to make a custom closure

Holes punch, eyelet setter, brass eyelets, 1/16 brass rod, panhead screw, knurl nut, acorn nut

Add eyelets


Make pattern, bend rod


Installed looks like this


Punch hole, install screw, knurl nut, and acorn nut.

On tip I would suggest is that when cutting internal corners on leather it can be good to punch out a small hole from the apex of the corner this halps the leather to fold neatly without puckering and more importantly reduces teh risk of the leather tearing at the corner, which can otherwise be a weak point, particularly since it's very difficult not to overrun slightly when cutting it out.

For that matter the same applies when working with sheet metal, particlualry if you;re folding it.

 i may make something similar with an internal framework or stiff backing inside for more of a rigid/molded look

I'm working on one myself and I agree totally! I kind of forgot about them on mine though... oops!
