Is it possible to get rid of the wood texture of dowell, so it can be painted to look like metal tubes? Would it be ok if I just sanded it smooth?

To get rid of wood grain we sand well, apply a thin coat of water based wood putty to fill in grain, sand again and again and again till crazy smooth, then paint. So far has worked really well for us.
