I mashed this picture for a different thread, but think it deserves a life of its own. If there were 10 Commandments for Steampunk, what would they be? I'll kick it off: Thou shalt not indiscriminately glue gears to something and call it Steampunk Thou shalt not harvest parts from an antique clock if it is still working

unless of course if the narf gun in question is both painted and has gears glued upon its body.. then it's okay.

ofcorse only when the gears are plastic what about: You shall not make wrongful use of the name of Steampunk and: Thou shall not steel. (only brass or copper are permitted) Thou shalt not harvest parts from an antique clock if it is still working
Modifing an antique clock when the front is wasted is permitted?

Would have been a real pain for steam locomotive builders back then. Lucky they had no commandments!

Thou art given the freedom to criticise the attire of abusive non-SPs, but only after they hast criticised your apparel. Thou shalt do proper research using the in-house search facility, before starting new threads. (im possibly guilty of this. )

This is going great. When we have a nice list I'll take the liberty of picking 10 and write them in stone. Here's another, though I don't expect it to make the list:
Thou shalt cast out no brass parts.

But WHY shalt I not steel? The only extra guideline would be that if you need to steel, it has to be boilerplate steel, preferably painted red or British rail green.

Thou shalt not simply cover completely something in brass or copper and call it steampunk. Thou shalt watch than it fit a victorian motive too.
And i also think than steel shall be considered steampunk too.
