Work in "Robot Zombie Monkeys from Space" and I'll be there.

Topic?  Oh yes.
People, just what do you expect from mass-marketed Halloween crap stores?  The "Witch" costumes look like nothing my Wiccan friends woud wear even as a joke, the Pirate costumes do not make you look Somalian, and all the costumes for women can be described as 'low budget porn film fantasy.'

Cheap plastic crap with a "Steampunk" sticker affixed to it does not impact my life in any way.  (Did you know that their "Race Car Driver" costumes are not made of Nomex?  Shocking!)

Also, is it just me, or does the fellow in the photograph have the same haircut, for some reason, as most of the Vulcans from the later series of Star Trek?

Although I quite like the idea of technology powered by annoyed Goths. Perhaps some tests are in order at Whitby...

Early experiments with the Seethers soul drives have left us, shall we say, "cautiously optimistic"...
Those costumes are appalling!! They're just run of the mill crap Halloween costumes with added (cheap crap)goggles. I mean, seriously..'Steampunk Witch'!!??? WTF?

So not like Deneghra? (only without the silly helm?) [looks at item] No. yk.

I don't care who says one can't be goth and steampunk simultaneously... but this isn't it.

Wow... those are... appalling.  Mixing the vampire in with the goth-y steam(sorta)punk certainly is, um... multitasking the marketing.

The mesh fingerless gloves might be fun, and the goggles might be salvageable.  I'll have to pop down and take a look!

You know, it really reminds me of the late 70's/early 80's (back when I was a kid).  For Halloween, we'd get those colored hair sprays and wear stuff that basically looked like Madonna in "like a virgin", and a bunch of different colored hair sprays in our hair - as many different colors as we could fit, and stick paper clips in our ears instead of earrings, and call ourselves punk.  So, try to think of this as the first step in instilling a love of steampunk among the impressionable youth.

The steampunk stuff is no more terrible than any of the other overpriced, low quality, disposable crap that companies pump out this time of year. And good luck finding something decent for kids that's not a movie, TV or toy tie in.

It's the last refuge for people without enough imagination to put together something unique.

Also, is it just me, or does the fellow in the photograph have the same haircut, for some reason, as most of the Vulcans from the later series of Star Trek?

I don't think that's how a widow's peak is supposed to look...

"Attach this Red Gothwerk Widows Peak Hairpiece and look really weird. "

...can't argue with that... at least you can't say their descriptions are inaccurate.

Yeah, I stumbled on this stuff at Party City too.

I kind of blew my mind, but it's just a marker for the movement catching on. Next year, you'll likely be seeing in in more places too.

Just stay true to doing what you do, and making great stuff, and it'll be alright.

I more fear somebody making a movie called "steampunk" that doesn't get it at all and does a terrible/dumb job, and killing the interest in the genre outright.

off topic I know, but can someone explain to me why this movie is so villified?  Should I be ashamed that I actually kind of liked it?

Yes. You should be horribly ashamed.

I'm kidding, I didn't think it was all that bad, except for bearing almost no resemblance to the comics it was based on.

ahhh.. shame is such a bitter-sweet delicacy.  I think I have to watch that movie again, right now

well, I never had the opportunity to read the comic so I just took the film at face value.  Perhaps that's why I wasn't offended by it.

yeah you really have to read the comics *first* to get how bad, and completely off from the original story the film turned out to be.

The Graphic Novel is WELL worth the readthough, trust me there!

And yes, I actually enjoied the movie AT FACE VALUE and nothing more.  I understand they totally butchered the story of the GN, (Just like with V for Vendetta and The Watchmen and From Hell and and and etc etc), but it was still a good MOVIE (just like the aforementioned... well, maybe not From Hell...)

Back to the task at hand:  Those costumes...  They...  I'm...  What the...  ... ...  HOW?

I just dont...  I mean, yeah, I'm new to steampunk, but I've got to say, if someone were dressed like that at a party/gettogether/whathaveyou and said "I'm steampunk!"  I'd be running AWAY from the movement!  I mean, that's me personally...

TOTALLY off topic, but funny as hell:  My 21 month old daugher is singing an old Latin Hymn along with the people on M*A*S*H (episode is Dear Sis, hymn is Dona Nobis Pacem)...  She's getting the tune and notes right, if not the words!  SO CUTE!  M*A*S*H is her favorite show, by the way...  A couple of years ago, my motherinlaw gifted me with the FULL 11 seasons on DVD...  We've ALWAYS got one TV playing them for my daughter...  She WILL not go to sleep without M*A*S*H!!!

I'm a little offended that they choose to merge Steampunk with vampires

Looking at the picture in the first post, (he, she, it?) looks like a Romulan mixing Goth and just wearing a pair of Steampunk Goggles.  Maybe they intend to tackle the Trekkie crowd as well!

I wouldn't be too offended. Many retailers don't seem to know there is a difference between Goth and Emo either.

can't tell if you were being serious or not... but this stuff is not that bad.  Most of it is Lip Service which is far less offensive than the Halloween crap.

I don't think it's a matter of being offended, but -correct me if I'm wrong- there's a much greater separation between someone wearing a British military uniform and a leather-bound Goth with black lips than there is between the Goth and a black-clad Emo (or Emette?  Cheesy)

The Steampunk "Thesis" is far more separate.  When I explain Steampunk to absolute new to the subject Non-Steampunks, all it takes is tge name "Jules Verne" or "Wild Wild West" for them to get an immediate picture in their minds.  I don't see how you can confuse that with Emo or Goth.
