HAHAHA!!! It's finally happened. China has caught up with the rest of the world and released a line of really crappy, plastic Steampunky accessories and costumes called "Gothwerk". The sub header states: "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE STEAMPUNK".

Welcome to the commodifying of our genre!

I'm sure that the people who buy them will get.....oh?....minutes of fun out of them.

I look forward to them turning up in the local poundshop.
It's about time they had something in there that I couldn't find a use for.

You see, I see something like that and think 'Brilliant, something very cheap I can mod up!'

I understand your point totally, but I also don't think it is always a bad thing that 'the mainstream' pick up on the genre. Many people are on a very tight budget and many can't make things from scratch.

As long as you don't expect something to be amazing quality for the price, I don't personally see a problem Smiley

That was my first thought as well.  Then I looked it up; doesn't look very useful.  It's more like...vampire goes brass-like plastic .

Most of it looks to be repackaging already existing things to me.

Have you seen the ACTUAL "steampunk" stuff that Museum Replicas sell?  I know BEFORE they had that line, they had some nice clothes that could be used (if somewhat, ah, not cheap?), as well as some REALLY nice blades and replica firearms (granted, the Le Mat replica just ticks me off...  If I am going to be carrying the Gravekeeper, I'm going to be CARRYING, ja?).  NOW they've introduced this really...  Not sure what to call it, really, line of "Steampunk" clothes, weapons, and gadgets.  ONE (well, SEVERAL, actually) of the weapons looks STRIKINGLY like some of the modded nerf/whatstheothercompany? guns I've seen on here...  Hrm, I wonder?

As far as the REST of the line is concerned...  Overpriced.  I'd rather go to Etsy and buy from someone who makes it themselves (I've got my eye on this really nice, sleeveless waistcoat...  if only it came in BURGANDY!)...

I will grant, some of those ray guns they have (although they look more 1950s) look damn pretty...  DAMN pretty.  Unfortunatly, I'm not to be bothered with paying $550 for a PROP.  When I can get a FUNCTIONING Le Mat for just over $800 (I'm a collector of old and unusual firearms)?  Granted, I'd not be able to wear that to a convention...  Ah well, it is what it is, right?

I'm actually working towards a sort of coilgun rifle...  One day, when I can afford to spend the extra! Cheesy

When I first saw the products some time ago, I felt the same.  But that's just because mainstream marketing doesn't realize there's a distinction between goth and steampunk.

It's the way Punk ended up, mostly. You get young guys walking around wearing cheapo patchwork jackets (made in China quite possibly) with 'Punk as f**k printed on them. People either understand the essence of a movement, or they do not.

Attempts at commercialism are inevitable.

Can't change your username, but here's another option:
Go to: Profile > [Modify Profile] Forum Profile Information
On that page you have the option of adding that line to your signature which will be displayed a the end of every post you make, or as a 'Personal Text' which will show up near your avatar.

I was thinking that I could take a peice of clothing in cheap material undo the stitching, use it as a pattern and cut out of real materials... only there isn't anything being offered. Goggles, legwarmers, and a pleather wrist band with a grommet in the middle with a sticker made to look like a compass.

what... how... just... sigh I'll put my hopes and tools away until somebody has something I can disassemble and play with.

Of course not.
But the people they will be selling to don't understand the whole point of Steampunk either.

Besides, they aren’t steampunk.
They are gothwerk. It's a bit like clockwork but rather than winding up clock mechanisms it's for winding up Goths.

But only if they're Eastern Germanic and about 2000 years old?

Although I quite like the idea of technology powered by annoyed Goths. Perhaps some tests are in order at Whitby...
