My Father always insisted he couldn't be in his second childhood, as he'd never grown out of his first...
Wilf Lunn. Oh, yes!

Quite early on Sunday morning I happened to be in the exhibition at the same time that Mr. Lunn and Mr. Rankin were doing their judging tour of the entries. To be able to lean on a pillar and watch those two discuss all the various devices was one of the most delightful moments in a whole weekend of delightful moments. Let me tell those of you who had items in the contest that every single one was subjected to very close and intensive scrutiny. Robert was his usual enthusiastic self, making sure that every button was pushed and every handle turned. Wilf was full of praise for the craft skills on show and was pondering how each one was made. ( To be honest, if he'd had a screwdriver on him, he'd have had the back off several of them to get a look at the works.) Both remarked several times on the near impossibility of choosing award winners.
Sitting in on Wilf's presentation was another joy. Great to see reminders of the machines that sent me hurrying to my Lego and Meccano boxes straight after 'Vision On' when I was a lad.
Much of what The Major calls 'Asylumitis' (The painful feeling in the cheek muscles caused by so much smiling and grinning.) was due to Mr. Lunn's presence.

Some say "Never meet your heroes, they will disappoint you", but that's patently not true: Neither Mr. Lunn, Commodore Rankin, Tom Baker or Gerry Anderson have lived down to that particular maxim! Mr. Lunn even rose to the challenge of what has been widely called 'The most predictable question ever*'- "Where do you get your ideas?" with aplomb and (eventually) brutal honesty- "Fear", truly wise words from a man who knows. *If anybody has any idea what sort of idiot would ask such a silly question, please keep it to yourselves.

i'll be honest, i didn't know much about Mr Lunn before meeting him. But I was lucky enough to have a few conversations with him and he really is just so fascinating and utterly adorable (and soooo Yorkshire!). Both him and Mrs Lunn said they really enjoyed themselves, and i think Mr Lunn and Mr Rankin are now BFFs (most amusing moment was possibly Mrs Lunn being very chuffed when i offered her my raffle prize as she took a shine to it,lol!)

How marvelous! Mr. Lunn's amazing and amusing works remain one of the fondest memories of my childhood (which, like many here, will never run its course...) It's such a delight to know he's not only still with us, but is as active and inspirational as ever. I'm glad also he found himself in like-minded company at the Asylum, and came to know how much he's loved and appreciated.

Wilf Lunn's talk was fantastic, it was certainly not to be missed and if you did your life is the poorer for it. I thoroughly hope he'll become a regular feature at The Asylum, wherever it is.

I was humbled that Mr Lunn accepted by Clockwork racer homage to him. I feel that not having an action figure of himself was one of lifes regrets that The Asylum was able to rectify. Despite being rather distracted, beyond things SP or even time-travel for a bit, I should like very much to express my profound admiration for the spirit you all continue to embody! May every one of you discover his (or her) inner Lunn!
