Brass Goggles ring
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:25:37 pm »
After some banter in the "And so it Begins..." thread, I have been inspired to make a piece of jewellery:

:

And being worn:

:

It's only plastic at the moment, but some of the folk at the ASYLUM are either jewellery makers or know folk who are, so it may well wind up as an actual lump of metal...

Anyone else want one?

:)

I think I have some smallish cabochons someplace, which makes me think I could fab one in silver with set stones for lenses. Hmm...

I, also, am interested in such a nice ring. By the bye, what kind of plastic did you use?

Crikey! That's quite a response, looks like I may have to take up Major Tinker's offer!

I, also, am interested in such a nice ring. By the bye, what kind of plastic did you use?

A slice of ABS tube for the 'ring' part, then various styrene tubes and shapes, and a little bit of model filler.

Would be happy to get a batch cast - in brass of course.

I have made some brass rings in the past. All I can say is that brass does horrid things to the skin when worn for prolonged periods and there are worries about  metal poisoning to be thought of. If one is going to use brass I would suggest chrome-ing it prior to wearing. Brass also does not keep a very good shine when worn and one would spend a great deal of time trying to keep it from looking like a piece of brown fuzzy metal.

perhaps a sealing varnish or lacquer would help things somewhat?
