I just read a story about a husband and wife who are well known UK children's entertainers - The Krankies. For those not in the know, they are Scottish, the wife is called Janette, and she is quite ...small...and played the part of a naughty schoolboy called "Jimmy". The story headline: Krankies admit to 'swinging' pastI didn't read the actual story, I was too busy screaming and searching for mind bleach!! Seriously, WTF? why tell people about that? It's like your grandad telling you about tea-bagging your granny when she was young - YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!! Urhm.... I wonder if she used the school uniform during any of that?...... *shudders* Oh god I feel sick... SS

Walked in to town to go to the bank, saw a queue of people (around 15) outside the butchers. Walked back about half an hour later, still about 15 people queueing, but different people. I suppose a butchers is an exception, as they could have been queueing for ordered meats or poultry, but still... I'm glad I'm not in work tomorrow, as I imagine it will be chaotic.

My mom's reaction to the information that Ferris, my oldest son, is receiving a bb gun for Christmas. I should have known she would be against it, but I think that he is levelheaded enough to handle the responsibility of a gun. Cub Scouts has taught him the basics of gun safety, and he has always had an interest in weapons, but she acts like he's going to turn into a little hoodlum the moment he gets his hands on a firearm.. It makes me think WTF?!

O.k. ..... We are talking a BB gun.... not an assault rifle or machinegun here right? I applaude you for reasoning that your son is old enough to possess this as long as he has had gun saftey and adhears to the rules laid down by you where is the problem you are teaching your son several things... as he grows up he will be given responciblities this is one of them, you teach him that you trust his jugement.... and you are teaching him that you believe in his ability to be reliable... encourage him to continue into the Boy Scouts.... (this is coming from an Eagle Scout) it will make him a well rounded individual... in time if he shows interest in guns get him a 22 go to the range with him maybe even join a shooting club ..... Although your mom is against this I think you are doing a great thing for you son.

Well I wrote a long post about this but it wound up feeling too political, so I deleted it. Let me sum it up by saying I think you are being a wonderful parent to your son. My parents got me a BB gun when I was young and it went a long way to teaching me gun safety. So don't let your mother get on your case. Continue to teach your son , and the best of luck to you. Thank you for teaching one more child to be responsible with weapons. We need more parents like you in the world.

"Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

Ok, now that THAT's out of my system-I think it's WONDERFUL you got your son a BB gun. To echo what's been said so many times already-it will teach him firearm safty in a very real way. I think Good job, and keep up the steller parenting! (Side note: My first BB rifle: age 4.)

Haha, my first gun, a Ruger .22, bought for me when I was BORN. Not trying to one up you, I've just always found that hilarious. My grandpa wanted me to have a gun right away, and my parents were totally cool with it. I didn't get to shoot it for a long time after that, but I always knew where it was and that it was mine. Now if that wouldn't make parents today ask WTF?! I'm not sure what would!

Thanks everyone for the support, I know that it is a good idea, partially because Ferris has been interested in weapons ever since he figured out that dowel + pencil sharpener = arrow... Also now he wants to learn how to build his own bb gun..

I don't know of any BB Gun kits, but when he's a bit older there are plenty of blackpowder rifle and pistol kits out there. That might be a fun project (and very easy to steampunk if he's in to that sort of thing at that point).

Proper teaching of weapons and even unarmed martial arts does not teach violence at all, instead it teaches the opposite.

But watch his young friends like a hawk. A nervous hawk. You don't know what they haven't been taught and at that age "Aw, come on. Don't be such a ---- I just want to hold it for a second. I know what I'm doing." from your best friend is hard to resist.

Of course, luckily his best friend is in the same Cub Scout troop, and has very sensible parents, and his other friends are not the type to do stupid stuff ( hopefully)..

My spare tire. It makes me go WTF just LOOKING at it! It's bubbled out on one side, bare to the THREADS on the other, and the rim's bent. How this happened, I have NO idea. I am a very safe driver for the most part.
I wonder if it's where I hit that Elephant the other night?

As it is just the tire and not the whole undercarriage I think it was more likely the alligator. Those rough hides of theirs are terribly hard on tires.

"I just want to hold it for a second. I know what I'm doing."
Now if that ain't the classic remark to set alarm bells ringing and red lights flashing...... All on a par with:- "Trust me. I know where I'm going. I've been here before." "It's perfectly all right, dear boy, the natives are friendly." "Don't worry, that knot'll hold a battleship." Etc., etc., etc.... Athanor

But the only alligators in the area are down at the Zoo, and that's 3 hours away! Surely to GOODNESS I'd remember hitting one of them (plus the meat is just sooooooo tasty, I'd not likely leave it sittin', know what I mean, Verne?)
