Good question Frances.

Now the quandary when answering is, should we be honest or tactful? *strokes chin*... hmmm.

Flippancy aside for a mo, I think I've made my feelings on how much I care pretty clear at this point. And for all the rubberneckers out there, I wouldn't get overly excited. I honestly don't foresee too much top shelf action going on in this thread.  Cheesy

Historically, pin-up photos and drawings ran the gamut from cutesy to nigh-pornographic, and from professionally done to very home-made.  So, if this is a pin-up thread (and the title suggests such), it seems reasonable that we should expect the same spectrum, preferably without complaint from the peanut gallery.

The trickier semantically is the modifier..."steampunk" pin-up.
DAMN that bloody word.  It seems always to be a point of contention.  It has it's own spectrum, from the "there's no definition" school to the "We need a stricter definition" school and everyone in between.

To proudly fly my own colors, I'm of the second school.  I'm quite opposed to the "no one has a right to say yay Steampunk/nay Steampunk philosophy.  We certainly DO have that right, both as individuals and as a community such that we attain/maintain some degree of general consensus and mutual/collective understanding (the glue that holds any community together) and in fact we NEED to continually hone our definition, for if we do not, we get watered-down and inferior material.  We can't pat heads and tell everyone "Good Job" all the time and expect any degree of real spirit or integrity.
Identifying successes AND failures allows for progress as well as the pushing of Self and Community towards excellence.

...with the caveat, of course, that we are constructive, polite, and gentle with each other, whilst refusing to forsake Honesty.

Because people like to look at people that they find attractive.

If you're not into it, then feel free to move on. Smiley

It can really be that simple. I've posted in the original thread, so don't think me unegalitarian when it comes to who can be looked at.

The moment we stop being visually stimulated by others is the moment we will no longer have a pin-up thread.

Another good question. Personally I'm hoping someone's going to post a damn picture soon and show us why. It's all getting a bit talky up in here. C'mon guys and gals, step up! or will I be forced to bear my extra Christmas pounds for the camera?

Do hope not, as I'm fairly certain that won't go down so well.

Indeed this thread is becoming not unlike a late night foreign film.  You stick with it because being on late and foreign something visually stimulating is bound to happen.

Instead lots of people just talk a lot and stare off into the distance (in Bruge in the autumn).

Because people like it to be perfectly honest with you I like it as well (as witnessed by my pictures here)  I think the thing to remember is pin up don't have to be nearly nude.  Really they can be any photo you think you look good in. http://www.toilgirls.com/hilda/gallery.html  These are my favourites flirty and funny with tons of personalty without showing a ton of skin.

As far as weather something is steampunk or not I don't think it is our place to say for the most part.  Sure there are a few things that scream not steampunk but other than that I think things ate pretty vast.  I am sure there are people that think some of my outfits are not steampunk but they are to me. I normaly leave them alone and keep doing what makes me happy.

...I just don't get this sentiment!  We are all respectfully entitled to our personal opinions, but if the Steampunk community doesn't get to decide what is and what is not Steampunk, who does?  I can't help but feel that if WE don't determine the boundaries, we are leaving it in the hands of others...that is, we leave it in the hands of folk who AREN'T Steampunk...what sense does that make?

And don't get me wrong, I don't feel there needs to be Steampunk Police Council of Elders going over everything with a fine-toothed definition comb, I believe there needs to be some degree of ambiguity to allow for the creative progression of the interests, aesthetic, community, etc.  It's important that boundaries be pushed, ya know?
But the "Steampunk is what you want it to be" sentiment just doesn't fly.   I can shove a wooden wheel into a lump of clay and call it a Bicycle, but a bicycle it ain't, regardless if I WANT a Bicycle to be "whatever I want it to be".

To some degree, the lack of definition of Steampunk is one of the primary reasons I shy away from calling MYSELF a Steampunk, even though I'm in a tophat and waistcoat with a waxed stache every day and live in Victorian-decorated house with other folk in tophats and waistcoats and corsets and fascinators...NONE of us can call ourselves Steampunks in good faith because that gives folk a very misleading impression as to what we're about, and I'm not about to go on a personal crusade to educated the uninformed as to the elaborate nuances of the debates within the Steampunk community as to the definition of the word.

Ug...it's just an ugly bag of word-worms. Sad

Yup they are. The Hilda pictures are actually from a from what i know fairly famous artist of the style.  I have looked a lot at the art and not all of it is revealing. in fact there is at least one artist artist that only did fully clothes ladies whose underpants had fallen down. ir is sort of amazing what is out there.

I think everyone should get the chance to give steampunk a go. That person with the horrible outfit may just be beginning and judging them may be the quickest way to get them to leave before they even really have a chance to start. Shops selling cheep junk and calling it steampunk are another matter and a bit more open to judgement because they arent trying to join us as much as make a quick buck off us.  I am no elite but I call myself a steampunk and the world of steam I have built in my head may not fit well in to the worlds others have made but I have every right to call it steampunk.

Personally, I enjoy most "pinup" art, and it IS an artform.  I have a congenital defect that makes me ignore pictures of guys. That's my problem, no one else's.

I smile seeing Miss Gaslight's occasional artfully-exposed ankle. I smile seeing "SteamGirl"'s online semi-pornographic postings.  I smile at many things in between.

There is a big , but totally subjective, difference between "pretty and suggestive in a certain aesthetic" and "a naked bathroom mirror selfshot that has a gear involved", if that makes any sense at all.

While I do think that the current discussion is an interesting and valid one to have, I feel like the thread is getting derailed in a similar way to that of the first volume's downfall (the reason that it was forced to be locked and restarted here). Though I may not be popular for saying it, I'd like to take the liberty of suggesting that the current discussion be continued (possibly moved) in it's own thread, or one of the many I'm sure have been going already, so that this thread is not forced to close and that folks read over the first post in this thread (quoted in it's entirety below), as I'm sure that I'm not the only person thinking this way.

I hope you don't feel that I'm stepping on toes suggesting this but it was stipulated in the thread's inception.

Maybe the Steam- side was losing out to the Punk- side on the previous thread, it has been locked and rebooted and we should take advantage of that. The subject is pinup so a certain amount of voyeurism and exhibitionism is to be expected. None the less, it takes a certain amount of guts to put ones self out on show and perhaps ridicule. Being roughly the same shape as The Squire, I have only admiration for his efforts.

I have seen bomber nose art - the acme of pinup - that wouldn't be permitted on this forum. I am *told*  Shocked that there is entirely period pron out there ranging from hardcore to fetish to pinup to calendar girl. While tastes may vary the category accepts a very wide degree of clothing coverage and posing.

What I would like to see in this new thread is constructive commentary rather than "You're not doing it right." Darkshines had a very valid point - professional shoots require cash and/or equipment. Those without either deserve some leeway in what they produce. Rather than ragging on the poor quality of the image or awkward staging due to lack of a tripod, we should be suggesting ways to overcome both or what could be done with better facilities. A well received set of phone cam test shots may lead to a model taking the plunge for a professional shoot.

Further this is Steam Punk not Victorian re-creation. Darkshines' PVC Nurses outfit was very much more to the Punk/fetish side but in my opinion a perfectly valid starting off point. What I would like to see is feedback on how one would adapt the PVC nurse look to the Steam side.
  • What would Florence Nightingale all done up in a shiny nurses uniform look like ?
  • What would the "Girls of the Crimea" calendar look like?
  • What's on the daguerreotype the airship pirate keep tucked away in her bunk?

To everyone who put themselves out on the previous thread - I admire your bravery and beauty

Thank You!

Though I may not be popular for saying it, I'd like to take the liberty of suggesting that the current discussion be continued (possibly moved) in it's own thread, or one of the many I'm sure have been going already, s

With all due respect, it's been my experience that is simply not a discussion this forum will support.

And In all honesty, I've concluded there isn't much to discuss. I've spoken personally online with most of what we might describe as the high profile Steampunk smut pedallers (I'm using that term in an affectionate way). I've put forward just about every valid argument there is regarding the negative aspects of what they do, and despite the fact that many of them don't even wholly disagree, It's their business, something they are often heavily invested in. So I can assure you they have no intention whatsoever of stopping.

And really what gives anyone the right to tell them to? Erotica in all it's forms, has been out there for centuries. I honestly believe it always will be. Despite various scientific studies, many opinions about it, be they positive or negative remain almost wholly subjective. Meaning any discussion will either end up extremely acrimonious, or best case scenario people will simply agree to disagree.

As Donna Ricci said to me (after I suggested to Kato she was doing herself and possibly the movement a disservice by choosing the Steampunk Babestation route she was taking), "you have no right to cast moral judgement on someone you didn't help to raise". I recall the discussion took a bit of a downturn when I suggested I didn't help to raise Hitler either, and I have no problem casting moral judgement on him. Hehe, yeah I've had some real doozy arguments with some of these folks, how pompously self important I must seem.  Cheesy

But extreme examples aside of course she's right. It's their free choice to do what they do. That's just a fact, and as long as they're working within the law, any opinions expressed are simply opinions and there's not much else can be said.

Mary Whitehouse (CBE) and her moral majority died a long time ago in my country. Their outraged Christian barking at our supposedly "permissive society" are but a distant echo to many people. And perhaps it truly is time to be a bit more forward thinking about all this.

If having a more Victorian view on it all makes you feel better, then know that smut, sauce and generally naughty shenanigans were perfectly acceptable, as long as they were kept in their place and never spoken of at the dinner table. Even Queen Vic herself has been revealed to be what we in the UK sometimes describe as "a bit of a goer", and she certainly gave Albert a few pin up pics in her time (well you don't get to conceive a million offspring just by breaking bread now do you).

Besides, we're not at the dinner table now, and I for one see no harm in the often rather gently natured shots featured in this thread.

So basically just to reiterate, if you don't like it don't look at it, it really is that simple.  Smiley
