I know that there were some get togethers in the past but I was never able to attend. Will there be anything going on in the future?

Hi there!
Most of us are still around but we don't have any real plans at this time. The person who used to set up our group meetings is in the process of relocating out of state and nobody has picked up the torch so to say at this time. I hope we will meet again in the future, sometimes it's hard to get everyone in the same place since we are scattered from well above Baltimore to deep in southern Maryland. If you don't mind me asking where are you located (if you want you can PM me with that)? The best thing I can suggest is to keep watching the forum for any gatherings.
There is also a group of people that seem to get together regularly in D.C. so you might want to watch the Guild of D.C. thread as well.

First post - hi all!

My wife and I (and our daughter) are also interested in Steampunk events in Maryland or DC. We live in Silver Spring. We only moved here in December and we still haven't scoped the area out for good Steampunk hangouts - bars, restaurants etc. Are there any Victorian theme restaurants or bars in the DC area that would do whenever we had the urge to get dressed up in our outfits?

That would be another great question to post in the guild of D.C. thread (I hope they don't mind me sending people over there), I don't know that area very well anymore as I have lived in Southern Maryland for the past 10 years. I know when our group gathered it was often at the Ram's Head Tavern located in Savage Mill or Downtown Annapolis. The local renfaire near Annapolis was another fun spot to meet in the Fall. Good luck scoping out the area for Steampunk spots.

I'm located in So.Central Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Towson and Frederick. I know that the Guild of DC and the Steel City Steam Guild have plans upcoming. I'm looking at taking a few jaunts through the NorthEast.

In all reality, "steampunk" is anachronistic, innit? Otherwise it's just Victorian dress-up.

I am in Maryland as well. I don't know of any events, besides one happening in Sept I heard of. Not many things seem to go on around here anymore :/

I have been off and on, working on things, depending when I have time. Being, unfortunatlly, currently unemployed now, I seem to have free time, yet no funds to do projects, Ha.  I have just taken to sitting on the bedroom/workshop/laboratory floor and cobbeling items that I have half finished to keep my steampunky gears greased.

I am always up for anything if something does come up. Hard to dress nice in this dastardly heat though.

Ok friends…..

This is for everyone going to the Pirate Adventure Weekend at the Maryland Renaissance Festival this weekend (25th & 26th). We all go with varying frequency, but I’ve noticed that the largest collection of us seem to descend on the Faire on Pirate weekend. So I decided I’d try and do something a little fun this year. For all those who are interested, I thought I’d issue a fun (?) challenge…. I propose a Pirate Day Photo Scavenger Hunt!

So here is the deal… Whichever day you go to the Faire, (Sat. or Sun.) put together a team of 3 or 4 ppl, walk around the place and take pictures with yourself and people you see with the descriptions you see below. Next week, starting on Monday, email me your pics and my comrade Bevan Johnson & I will tally scores and determine the winner. 1st place gets bragging rights, and in addition I will put up a large size pirate flag to go to the winner. I’ll also post the best examples of each category below for everyone to see.

Below are the pictures you need to capture. Remember, you or a team member needs to be in the pic too in order to get credit.
Some of these can be 2-fors or 3-fors (ex: a historical figure (10 pts) who is a pirate with an eyepatch (2 pts) would be good for 12 points. A King (10 pts) who is a historical figure (10 pts) is good for 20 pts. A pirate with a hook (5 pts) who is also the scurviest seadog (5 pts) who also has an eyepatch (2pts) is worth 12 pts. (And in need of the public healthcare option, I would think…) I’m sure there are more combinations… you get the idea.
Only one entry for each category, (although some entries can fill more than one as stated above), so you can’t rack up points for taking pictures of 5 pirates with eyepatches or 3 kings (and none of those B.S. eastern kings that visited little baby Jesus).

As a little bonus, any picture you take toasting with somebody (raising your drinks in a toast) is worth double, and picture you take where the subject is eating a turkey leg (yours or theirs) is worth triple.

10 points:
A King (self explanatory)
A Queen (self explanatory)
A Historical Figure (Galileo, Blackbeard, Capt. Morgan, etc.)
A Devil (with horns or wings)
An Angel (with wings or a halo)
A Templar Knight
Any Mythological beast (centaur, unicorn, etc.)
Any character from myth or legend (King Arthur, Robin Hood, Beowulf, etc.)
Death (anyone dressed like Death)
Anyone on a segway or wheelchair decorated as a horse
A Furry (worth double if you can get the furry to lat down and play dead as though you killed it.)

5 points:
A Pirate with a parrot (or any shoulder critter)
A Pirate with a Hook
The Sauciest Wench
The Scurviest Seadog
A Wizard
A Witch or Warlock
An Elf (with ears)
A Dwarf
A Viking
A Roman
A Ninja
A Kung-Fu fighter
A Musketeer (ala’ The 3 Musketeers)
A Monk
A Maiden chaste of thought & pure of heart (or at least one who appears so)
A Plague Doctor
A Baby in garb/ Ren Faire costume.
A Somali Pirate
A man in a codpiece (cod must be visible)

2 points:
A Noble
A Commoner
A Hero (anyone who looks sufficiently heroic)
A Villain (anyone who looks sufficiently villainous)
Any Movie Character
Any Star Trek/ Star Wars characters.
A Fairy (with wings)
A Scotsman
A Barbarian
Any Jack Sparrow
Any LOTR character.
A Knight
A Pirate with Eyepatch
Any Anime character
A whole family in Renn Faire garb
A Steampunk

If you wish to participate, email me here, reply to this thread or at my gmail account (hbb3rd@gmail.com). Sometime early next week, email me your pics and which category/ categories they fit, as well as how many points you figure they are worth. Just FYI, Sarah, Bevan & I will be attending on Sunday. Once the entries are in, Bevan & I will evaluate, tally the points and post results ASAP. Again, email me ASAP if you want to play along, and happy hunting!!

i didn't hear from anyone so got started but didn't make the state line before i had two flats at that time i said ph@@it and drove back . spent afternoon doing flat repair with a bumper jack, can of starting fluid, and a tiny compressor.... loud noises, flames... more loud noises..scared the cat... did not know that a cat could levitate (5 feet straight up  do a 180 in mid-air then 0-45 in .3 seconds) i almost crushed my toe when i dropped the hammer i was laughing so hard.
so I never made it up to see the ship and i guess i wont if the info is correct.

Aberdeen,Harford county 40 odd miles from Baltimore. been out here in the east 8 months or so, met a few of the other locals so far ,had fun at the one Guild off DC meet i made it to. was out this last week puting in job apps and was near Cesapeake city so stopped at the C and D Canal Museum there it was kinda neat.  the original steam engines are still on site on the original foundations.  could be a good spot for a meet up and picnic in warmer weather.  the parking area had four or five picnic tables next to it.  the museum is run by the army corps of engineeres and has free admission .   just a thought.

I'm a newbie to the boards here, but I'm a Maryland/ Delaware steampunk located about 45minutes north of Baltimore right by Newark, DE.

FYI- Abney Park is playing at the Mythic Faire in Baltimore on March 11, 2011 as part of the Time Travelers Masquerade. I'll be there!
