Can't you? That's exactly what I did for mine. Albeit a cheap one from a fancy dress shop but its got the shape and colour and the tassel. It'll do for now. As for what it looks like, I do think it makes me look like an Ottoman villain from a Bond story but that's exactly what it should look like. Fine notion! At the risk of belabouring the obvious, one of the joys of the Fez is that the absence of a brim renders the hat as a whole far better at accommodating a range of head shapes. |

I have my Great Grandfather's beautiful hand-stitched velvet smoking cap & intend to make a copy I can wear myself. How 'bout a Gentlemen's Challenge for hand-stitched head wear? I need to make a cap for practice before embarking on the real thing.The embroidery is going to be fun - I will need to practice that, too, as I haven't done any embroidery for a while!
Just as trivia, my GGF & I have the same sized head!

I like the idea of doing hand stitched hats. Not as quick as I once was with a needle due to my arthritis but I can still whip up a mean piece of embroidery. |

There's going to be a bit of silk-based material being purchased at my end, I can see!
May have trouble with the padding, as GGF's is wool, & I don't think it can be bought anymore. The material I have to practice on is a lovely sort of mid to dark-ish turquoise blue, but the stuff I need for the replica will be a dark green silk velvet, with black silk lining.

For wool padding see if you can connect with a spinner. Many have drum carders for the wool that produce quite nice batts.

I do hand spinning because I started building spinning wheels and figured I should know what I was aiming for. Recently I acquired a drum carder. Though it is currently being held in captivity by my oldest daughter. Do a web search for local wool sellers. Often you can get carded batts direct from them.

They are cool by dint of their design, plenty of space above the head allows air to circulate. Much better than a flat cap or similar in a hot climate. Would be even better if they were provided with some holes at the top to aid circulation as per the pith helmet.

Would be even better if they were provided with some holes at the top to aid circulation as per the pith helmet. Holes which don't do anything to help keep your head cool I might add! Can't remember who it was..(maybe Major Quicksilver?)..at the first Asylum had a battery powered fan mounted inside the dome of his pith. His hair wasn't soaked with perspiration when he removed his pith, I can tell you! |

The mention of fans gives me an idea. Remove the top from the fez. Install a small red LED PC fan, aimed to blow upwards. Just above this, fit in a fan grill, with a few short strips of very thin cloth or tissue attached. The idea is that the fan both blows and lights up the strips, simulating fire. Since a fez is basically shaped like a volcano...  |

I am currently preparing for fitting a similar device in my pith. A 12v miniature fan from a CPU cooler and a 9v battery. The plan is that the fan will fit discretely above my head in the space between pate and air vent blowing air down onto the top of the head. A simple grille will be required to prevent the thing ripping hairs from the top of my non-brilliantined head. It will generally blow so it won't be sucking hairs upward - I don't have enough to spare to allow hair-pulling during testing. The battery is quite bulky and so an external fitment is required, perhaps an enclosure such as a small soldered and decorated brass pipe on the rear of same pith. An old toggle switch and hey-presto, head-top refrigeration. If anyone has any photos of the previously mentioned installation I'd love to see it as the only way of mounting the fan that I can see so far, is to drill four holes and attach with screws.
