There is at least one Dad's Army re-enactment troupe, I've seen them at History in Action and the Goodwood Revival- some of them are frightening like their television counterparts!

The Third Foot and Mouth can take the Walmington on Sea Home Guard any day, although we could easily end up with a version of Corporal Jones fighting on both sides. He could quite easily have been part of the Regiment in his earlier military career. His constant cries of "They don't like it up them!" is suddenly put into context if he was indeed a "Devil in Skirts".

Jones served in the Sudan against the fuzzie-wuzzies during the Mahdist war and the reconquest of the Sudan.  He then fought in the Boer War.

Jacket, sporran and hose arrived, belt to follow.

I found the jacket arms to be a bit long, but on inspection, you're supposed to turn them up to suit your arms...

They think of EVERYTHING!

(kilt to be ordered soon, along with gaiters and cap badge)

One important purchase today an 1897 shilling to go in my sporran. The Queen's shilling, essential for swearing in new recruits. I just need to put it on a chain....

Well, it's official, I am too tall for the regular drop of 24" that most (if not all) off the peg kilts come in.

That means I have 2 options, either get a made to measure (cheapest quote I've had is £255 so far) or make it myself. I have made a kilt in the past, but it was from, shall we say, non traditional materials. and there was no tartan pattern, so the setts didn't need to be quite so precise. If I can find a method online for kilt making, then I might have a stab at it, failing that of course, I could go down the Roy Castle (Capt. Keene) officer route and get trews.

Sebastian

The kilt is probably one of the most simple pieces of clothing to make. Remember, the first kilts were pleated every morning and belted on.

The easiest way to get the pleats the right size is to make a little cardboard template of the right thickness and hold it over each pleat as you tuck it towards you. Pin them together then sew into you waist band.

Simples!

Blimey, Mr Inkerman...how tall are you? I'm 6ft 4ins and my off the peg kilt reaches comfortably from navel to knees.

I'm 6'2".

Have you measured yours? Is it a 24" drop? Whenever I've tried 24" drop kilts on in the past, they've been sitting on the top of my knees. Slioghtly too short for comfortable wearing in my opinion. I was told by a kiltmaker that I would need a 25"-25.5" drop, but then I do have fairly long legs for my height.

On the plus side, I have found on eBay 13oz wool at just under £12 per metre. so the fabric could be got and I could make it from lightweight wool for slightly more than the price of a poly-viscose. That way it would be a good length for me too rather than me feeling very slightly uncomfortable.

I can't measure the drop on mine right now as I only have a wooden ruler to hand and I'm wearing the kilt today. But when I  take it off tonight I'll get my tape measure and check.

Just got in to the gaiters. Need to try them out with my boots, but first impressions are that Lady Elsie was absolutely right and they are incredibly small on the calf. Buttons will need to be moved and I may even need to make a new leather strap. There is no way on this earth that they are for size 11 feet.
