Portmeirion was also the location for The Mask of Mandragora, the Doctor Who episode which introduced the steampunk auxilliary control room for the Tardis.

Can you put me down for a helmet too? I think a unit of 3rd foot and mouth for events would be incredibly good. I didn't actually see the movie when it was on, but didn't they have the Enfield MkIII bolt action rifles?

Actually in the film they use Rifles MLE Mark I which is very similar to the Mark III but is four inches longer with a longer barrel. I would be very happy if people did opt for the Mark III (SMLE) particularly since I actually already have two. (The MLE Mk I is rather expensive as a Deac and no replicas are available.)
Deac SMLEs can be held by anyone without a license. These are generally around £300.
Denix do an excellent replica SMLE. These retail at around £160 to £200. They are controlled under the VCRA and are only available to people for theatrical, educational or reenactment use. I am authorised to purchase and supply these and could potentially order a batch at a modest discount.

It would appear that The Countess is more 'up for this' than I anticipated. She loved Llangellan and has professed a desire to return to Walesand would love to see Port Merion..as would I. However... it's not really something I think we can do this year! With Asylum approaching (and Whitby after..although we ourselves aren't doing Whitby I'm guessing there's plenty who are who would like to do this as well) and then Christmas and New Year. If we take into consideration petrol..B&B for the weekend..not to mention the 3rd Foot and Mouth uniform it's not something we could really afford between now and the end of the year but would be a great weekend away in the Spring, perhaps?
So if this does come off as a weekend away would it be something you'd be planning for this year or the first half of next year?

Realistically I think this is an outing for the spring too. Perhaps March? We can look at dates and plan.
I have been looking at the prices for self catering accomodation in Portmeirion itself. Weekends (3 nights) look to be in the region of £90 per person.
Local hotels or B&Bs may be cheaper. We can do more research of course.
Itinerary wise could easily be:
Friday night travel up and settle in. Saturday stage a commemorative march up "The Khyber Pass" then return to digs for a celebration dinner. If we found a suitable property (Portmeirion is unlikely to be suitable) this could be a "Khyber Dinner" with an Indian menu from my "Jottings from Madras" cookbook (an original account by a Victorian British Officer serving in India) complete with a few surprises and sfx. Sunday explore Portmeirion and look at Prisoner and Doctor Who inspirations. Last night festivities back at the digs. Monday say our goodbyes and head for home.
What do people think?

sounds excellent Major. Ordered kit from WPG (went for their boots for consistency), badge not orderable on iPhone, kilt I am seeking your advice, want Black Watch as it matches a smoking jacket I have with BWT trim.
In joining up for the Third Foot and Mouth, are we taking the Pith? Next time we are at the Expo we will have to take on the UK Garrison.

It could only happen here. The formation of a 'Carry On' film re-enactment group. I hereby apply to be part of the 'smutty innuendo' sub-commitee. I thought I'd get dibs in early as that one is bound to be over subscribed. On a practical note, re. a trip to north Wales. It might be worthwhile to look into the possibilities of Climbing Club 'hut' accommodation as a high volume solution. They would give a good base for operations and allow a degree of freedom to engage it our own brand of fun that more 'normal' digs might not. The area around Snowdon has a good selection, I've stayed at quite a number of them over the years. I'll look into it.

And we can all get a little plastered... Have any of you seen these? They're an impressive 9" tall! Apparently they do a Sir Sidney-Ruff-Diamond as well but I can't find a picture of it.

kilted now, thank you Major, tracked down the supplier you suggested and purchased an 8 yard kilt. Not wool mix unfortunately, they appear to be about 4 times the price. Perhaps you need to put a page on the VSS web-site including all the links and setting out the glorious history of the 3rd!
Are we going to have a parade at The Asylum? Perhaps at the end of the Masqerade?

I was somewhat surprised to find an entry for the 3rd Foot and Mouth on ARSSE (The Army Rumour Service where squaddies past and present hang out.) It lists the following regimental features: Raised at Invercracking, Clackmannanshire on 25th January 1759 by Royal Order to assist in the Great Thistle Harvest of 1760.
Regimental Motto: Illud carduus es periculosus procerus.
Quick March: Have 'ye seen ma hairy coo?
Slow March: Sixteen bottles o' buckie/Buckfast Rhapsody in D Minor
Anniversaries: Battle of Jubilee - 1st April Battle of Umboto Gorge - 31st November
Regimental History: From The Khyber to The Balkans
Regimental Journal: Devils in Skirts A previous copy of the Regimental Journal is included: Of course it may all be incorrectly recorded but it gives us somewhere to start.

Of course as steampunk enthusiasts we can add a future history of the regiment. Carry On Up The Canalli! the 3rd Foot and Mouth show the Martian foe what for! Basically the photographic history of the regiment would be a series of differently foes shrinking back in horror and fear at the raised kilt.

A new history of the 3rd Regiment (Foot and Mouth)
Raised in 1660 by Lord Montgomery Pue a staunch Royalist. (Great Great Grandfather of Lord Darcey Pue who distinguished himself during the French Revolution along with Sir Rodney Ffing) by Royal Order as "Pue's Regiment of Foote". It has served with distinction since that time. In 1751 it was formally awarded the title of 3rd(Foot and Mouth) Regiment of the Line. The Pues and Ffings have been associated with the Regiment throughout it's history. Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond himself being a descendant of the Ffing line (hence the marked family resemblance.)
Nickname: The Devils in Skirts Mottos: Umquam promptus pro factum "Always Ready For Action". Illud carduus es periculosus procerus "That thistle is dangerously tall." Battle Cry: "Up kilts and at 'em". Colours: Navy facings Tartan: Mackenzie and Royal Stewart in honour of the Royal connections of the Pue's and their linkage through marriage to the Mackenzie Clan. Badge: A simple Royal shako plate bearing the numeral 3.
Distinguished Commanders: Lord Montgomery Pue 1660-1691 Sir Hugh Pue 1745-1771 Sir Barnabay Pue 1795-1816 Colonel Keene 1904-1916
Anniversaries Khalabar March 16th Umpopo Gorge September 11th
Battle Honours Sevastapol Khalabar Heatherden Umpopo Gorge Watkin's Path
Regimental Journal: Devils in Skirts
The deeds of the 3rd Foot and Mouth will continue...
(Note Sevastapol added for an account of Regimental activities in the Crimea)

Would a Buchanan be acceptable? My kilt is Hunting Buchanan and as a clan loyal to the Stewart cause, it is not so dissimilar as would clash. Just not sure of regimental etiquette! Also, what is the significance of the 'diced' Glengarry? Mine is a plain one...
This has to be one of the best ideas so far - agreed - only on Brassgoggles would you find a 3rd Foot and Mouth re-enactment!

Angus of course a Buchanan would be acceptable within the ranks of the 3rd. It is rather a "statement" tartan if I may say so, meaning no disrespect of course, so will earn prominence I am sure. The diced Glengarry is for those people who would wish to be able to wear their kit at serious re-enactments, e.g. Crich and would be tied to the Mackenzie tartan. A "Foot and Mouth" uniform replacing the FSH (pith helmet) with a diced glengarry with Seaforth's badge is instantly a Seaforth Highlander. A plain glengarry with Black Watch badge would do the same job with the Royal Stewart tartan. It has been remarked that my heritage makes me rather frugal with a mixture of Scots and Yorkshire. (There is a wee bit of Welsh in there too - wherever there are coal mines you find my ancestors.) The Glengarry and badge at around £20-£25 turns a fun steamy outfit into a complete re-enactment kit in a way which satisfies both my historical sensibilities and my purse. I am not aware of a regiment wearing the Buchanan tartan (I would like to be corrected) so you would not enjoy the same opportunity for conversion to a "serious" kit unfortunately. In which case if you wanted a glengarry to wear in place of the FSH then the choice would of course be yours.) Of course BG is the place where we could create a re-enactment unit of the 3rd Foot and Mouth. Nowhere better eh?

This idea has actually made me think about buying a kilt which is something I would never have contemplated previously (revelling in my Englishness as I do); mind you one viewing of my bandy, pasty white legs will probably have a mob of passers by burning the offending kilt in short order
