My tunic, glengarry and sporran arrived today. I was slightly surprised to find that it was coming from the UAE rather than the US. Incredibly fast turnaround wherever it was from. I bit the bullet and ordered a kilt from Macdonald sporrans through eBay on the understanding that if it wasn't the right size I could return it for a full refund. That should be arriving tomorrow. Got the belt to make and the hose to buy and that's pretty much it apart from badges etc.

Still waiting to hear back from the badge people, if I haven't heard by tomorrow, I'll give them another ring.

Damn. that vendor only sells small items on ebay, which is not mobile enabled. I am going to try Sabre Sales they have something described as white highland spats, which is I presume the same thing, at a fiver. I will also ask them about military piper sporrans.

On the plus side IMA have just confirmed that they have sent off the webbing. Belt has arrived from WPG, so I  have base and full combat kit except the gaiters and badge.

Someone else on here with the same (size 11) gaiters may be able to give you their dimensions quicker than I can as I'll have to wait til I get home tonight to measure them. If, by tonight, no one has replied I'll take the measurements and post them, Mr Bastable.

much obliged to you Captain

Ok..apologies for the delay..I measured my gaiters last night but unfortunately I measured them just above the ankle, I think...I can  re-measure tonight and post again if it helps..

They measured 11 inches edge to edge but the distance from buttons to button holes is only 9.5 inches

I have ordered two pairs from Sabre sales for £20.00, largest possible, so I may have a set ready to cannibalize into a pair to fit my chunky ankles.

From this thread it would appear that the Scottish Regiments appear to recruit from the Pygmy population.

I couldn't get on either last night this seems to be a global problem.

Ok Mr Bastable I've just measured round the ankle and it's pretty much as I said earlier...11" edge to edge but there's an inch and a half less  from buttons to button holes.

As a matter of interest, I was in a branch of The Works remaindered bookshop yesterday and noticed that they are currently stocking a number of 'Carry On...' films on DVD at £2.99 each or two for £5.

Perhaps a good chance to replace the old worn-out VHS copy or dodgy download?

As my VHS copy is  probably tres ropey by now quality wise...and I don't even own a VHS player anymore anyway..I think a visit may be in order.
Hmmm 2 for a fiver, eh? What should I  pair it with...'Cleo'? ("Infamy, infamy..they've all got it in for me!")..'Screaming'? ("FOUL. FEET. SMELL. SOMETHING HORRIBLE")..'Teacher'? ("Miss Allcock, ding-dong!")..or 'Cowboy'? ("I'm from Texas ma'am, we've all got big ones down there!")

Decisions, decisions...

The 'Carry On' films are all available on DVD through Amazon at ridiculously low prices.

Individual titles for £2/£3, a number of collections with 4 films on each for as little as £6, a 12 film collection for £20 and a COMPLETE collection for around £40 (although 2nd hand).

Just thought I'd mention this for those thinking of buying for the first time or upgrading/replacing those worn out VHS copies. Grin

Got mine from eBay, was a little more pricey but then I wasn't aware of the deal at the works at that point.

Quick question, are we going for red and White diced hose or red and black? I've been doing a little research and the black watch seems to have been issued with the red and black diced hose, although the movie has red and White. Again, not that familiar with protocol and relative hostories of the regiments etc. but from a re-enactment point of view, can I get away with the red and White with the tartan that I have? I don't particularly want to shell out twice for hose to he honest. Bit then I also don't want to be disrespectful by wearing incorrect kit

Gaiters arrived today one set of size 11, too small and one rare set of size 12, still too small but look like being fixable by merely moving the buttons a half inch towards the edge. My fears over my chunky calves were fully justified.

I visited Sabre Sales today, and was directed to two HUGE boxes of gaiters and left to it.  I can safely say the jocks have legs like stick insects!  They were all too small to fit over boots and my chunky calves.  I was told that they are normally worn with brogues, and looking at the polish marks on the inside of some of them that would confirm that.  As for 'whiting' them, it seemed all sorts had been used, from blanco to gloss paint!

I don't want to sound like a salesman for Sabre Sales, but if you have the opportunity to go there, do it!  They have loads and loads of stuff, screaming to be used!  The online catalogue doesn't do the place justice, there are rooms and rooms of kit to explore, try on, peruse, and buy.  If I hadn't been on the motorbike I would have come away with loads!

So, back to the gaiters, think I might get some sail canvas from somewhere, make a pattern from the one's I've got, enlarge it for boots/chunky calves, use the stiffeners from the originals, then paint them with whatever comes to hand.

I noticed the Edinburgh Bagpipe Company in Bexhill-on-Sea (of all places) also stocks regalia - so they appeared to have in stock gaiters, stockings and regimental sporrans. I did not get a chance to visit and talk to the owners but it may well be that some of you could be interested.

Gaiter success. The size 12's with the buttons moved to the edge are a perfect fit, they look normal and no need to mutilate the backup size 11's, so these can go into the communal pot for the more daintily thewed members of the company (that probably means Ian).

Is the Edinburgh Bagpipe Company of Bexhill-on-Sea run by a Mr Crun and Miss Bannister? It sounds like it ought to be.
