Slight rewind to the earlier subject of a mascot.

It was put to me today, by a non-Steampunk I might add, that considering it's the 3rd Foot & Mouth perhaps the mascot should be a mad cow....

Well..as it's Foot and Mouth I  think it should be a burning cow!

Despite being frighteningly technologically adept (I know one end of a piece of coal from the other you know - heh heh) I haven't quite figured out how to upload images directly in a post.

So those who know me on facebook will find a rendition, not only of the Major at a suitable location (sans lady in denim), but also a somewhat frightening artists conception of what the Third might look like on guard duty.

Those who don't know me on facebook, aren't on facebook, or don't want to go on facebook, had better tell me how to post a blimmin' picture!  Grin

Or if anyone wants to pinch it from my facebook page and post it here that's good too.

Why thank you kindly Miss Groves.

I take it then, that images cannot be directly uploaded to the forum? Only links to images hosted elsewhere?

That makes sense - I'll pop the images up somewhere and link to them then.

My DVD arrived today, took some screen grabs that may be useful.

Looks like the shako badge is quilted rather than having laurels and with no regiment number either.

webbing still isn't too clear in the pics, I think I need a tri over to the armouries to get some detailed pics of the slade wallace pattern before I can get any started

Anyhoo. they are screen grabs straight from the movie, so copyright wise I'm not sure that we can use them on the website without permission. Mr. Harrow can probably advise better than I can. Not even sure I should have them on my photobucket to be honest.

Google translates Brass goggles to латунь очки

According to my Oxford Russian Dictionary (which I happen to have lying around despite the fact I don't know Russian)
латунныи is the adjective for brass
 очки is spectacles or goggles

So it'll possibly be латунныи очки

Quite right Mr Danbury Shakes.

The "ыи" ending on "латунныи" makes it an adjective with the ending agreeing with the gender of the noun. Thus "lat-niye" for the none syrrilic readers.

"латунь" (lat-un" is the noun for the metal.  In English we obviously do not discriminate between the two forms.)

Thanks for the reminder on "очки" ("ach-ki" I beleive the first "o" is soft in this case)  I couldn't find my blasted dictionary.

The problem with the translating software is it doesn't descriminate on case or gender.

Back to the movie.  The Helmet plates are the standard Victorian general service plate and the centre would ordinarily have the regimental badge included.  I can't see from the screen grabs quite what they have put in the centre.

Helmet plates with centres would have worked out in the £65-£85 range which is why I opted for the plain 3rd Regiment (actually the Buffs) numeral Shako plate.  Not screen accurate but affordable and tells the story as it were.

For kilts try Macdonald Sporrans at www.buyakilt.com, 8 yarders in acrylic for around £40. Quote 'thanksfor5' at the checkout for a 5% discount on everything you order.

Going for the full Slade Wallace webbing, I like the look, however I do note the Foot and Mouth RSM doesnt wear it, he has a red sash instead, so anyone wanting to cut the SW webbing can merely add the red sash (and spear) and have 'full' 'authenticity'. Of course there can only be one RSM... Fight

I have just tried on my gaiters.

*sigh*

Can't even get the ends to meet round my ankle! Not going to be easy adjusting them to fit, either.

The general consensus seems to be: Buy the size 11s, and move the buttons.

Typical British issue: One or two sizes, fits none.

I did have a thought about this, mine don't particularly fit either even after moving the buttons. There is the option of completle re-making them, but it's far too much faff. What I reckon is that if you add a small amount on the button side in as similar a canvas as you can find and either unpick the existing seam or french seam the new piece on, it'll be just as strong as the original, there is the issue with the buttons effectively fastening in the wrong place then, but short of either taking them apart for a pattern or putting a piece on the otehr side and making new buttonholes I can't think of anything else to do. The other issue I had with my gaiters is that the leather strap was far too short, I just made a new one from two thicknesses glued together of bike leathers leather that I had laying around looks to be the correct thickness and it seems to work OK. Slightly more supple too.

I havent bought gaiters yet, so your experience is salutory, I have especially chunky ankles, so  this may be an issue. Where did you lads get yours?

Mine came from the British supplier Maj. Tinker recommended. They are really good quality but as pointed out above, may be for size 11 feet but only if the person has the ankles of a pre-teen girl!! I mean no disrepect to any member of the Highland regiments who wear them or to any male adult on here whom they do actually fit  but come on!! How skinny must their ankels/calves be?Huh

Mr Inkerman, we appear to be on the same wavelength. I too decided the best thing to do would be to get some suitably strong material of the same colour,if not canvas then maybe  doubled over twill, remove the existing buttons and attach the new piece to the button side thus extendeding it by about 2 inches and re-attaching the buttons to that. As for the leather bit  that goes underneath, it will do up in stockinged feet but  won't reach with any sort of footwear on. How small are  Highland regiment's feet for heaven's sake???

I've had the same trouble with the underfoot strap on previously purchased spats. Could I trouble you for the gaiters ankle measurement? I 'think' my ankles are quite slender for a man so I might be able to squeeze into them, if not I've got some canvas knocking about the house.

Someone else on here with the same (size 11) gaiters may be able to give you their dimensions quicker than I can as I'll have to wait til I get home tonight to measure them. If, by tonight, no one has replied I'll take the measurements and post them, Mr Bastable.
