The leather hat I'm currently working on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Believe it or not, in the picture it has no top and the brim isn't attached yet. It's also inside out for sewing.

The end result will hopefully be more of a leather coachman's hat. The brim will be shaped and probably shortened.

::edit:: For some reason the picture is looking kind of squished. You can see that picture and in progress shots on my blog http://ramblingsofawould-berenaissanceman.blogspot.com/2013/01/leather-top-hat-stage-2.html

Finished!

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out but I have a question for the discerning hat enthusiast. I've been calling this a leather top hat. Would you count this a top hat or something else? And if you would count it a top hat would it be part of a sub category of top hats?

In Victorian times the sub-categories were done vis-a-vis the height of the crown rather than the material of the hat, I believe.

I guess I'm referring more to the general shape than the material. Someone looked at it and said, "Well it's not really a top hat but it looks cool." It's not like he was anyone who would know what they were talking about when it comes to styles of hats, but it stung a little and I figured I would see what the people on this fine forum had to say.

Is it definitely a top hat or something else? Would it be counted a specific type of top hat? I've seen a taller coachman's hat that it's similar too, but as far as I knew that was still counted a top hat.

I've been puzzling over your hat - and now I have it.  The brim.  It is somewhat wider than a traditional topper.

Bingo!  Hence the somewhat, to me, western feel to it.

I knew I should have cut it down further. When I initially made it I wasn't sure how big it would need to be so I made it pretty large. Then I trimmed it down some so it didn't look like a cowboy hat, but I guess it wasn't far enough to completely get rid of the western feel.

So are you going to do a slight modification?  (Have a look at a few googled top hats so see how narrow they are.)  Is it possible to amend the brim?

I'm not entirely sure. The thing is when measuring the actual width of the brim it's really no wider than my felt topper. I think the difference is that the brim on the felt topper is curled up more which makes the end result a lot narrower and I don't know if I can curl the sides up enough without losing that low front (which I like). Maybe I'll play around with something somewhere in between, i.e. trim a little, curl a little. Who knows. I'm really not even sure what can be done since it's dyed already but worst comes to worst I leave it like it is and I'm still pretty happy with it.

Thanks for the input!

ah, but maybe your felt topper has a rather wider brim than the old silk toppers had, do you think?

It is still a good looking hat.  Enjoy it for what it is and go for a more formal/London look next time.

Oh!  Please do not take this as criticism of the actual hat.  I was just having a discussion about the style of toppers.  Really.

Oh pish-tosh, I wouldn't have asked for opinions if I couldn't take it. I made this hat with my own two hands and I'm incredibly proud of it. Saying that it looks a little western or that the brim is a little wide doesn't take that away. I think it looks awesome even if it didn't turn out exactly how I originally planned and I can always use what I've learned to make another.

As far as the width of my felt topper, I have no idea about the comparison to older silk top hats. I know I've seen some variances but I just thought that came down to style and preference.

This hat is the same as my felt top hat:

As it happens my own original silk topper is within arms reach at the moment.  Hang on a sec whilst I get out the tape measure. . . .

2.75 inches from the join with the crown to the edge of the brim.  How deep is your brim?

That's the same measurement I got on my felt top hat. I tried to make my leather one to the same measurements. I'm going to have to re-measure it, though I do think part of it is because it's not curled up like they usually are. Maybe when you make a hat with leather you just have to account for the fact that it's less flexible and make it smaller.

It might just be that leather is thinner too and makes it look a little off.  I know my Fezs look a whole lot different in different weights of felt.
