Try our Steampunk Search Engine.

We are now offering a steampunk look for our SiteTruth search engine, the search engine which finds out who's behind the web site. (Patented!)

This is quite real. We do indeed operate the SiteTruth system. The search results will appear in appropriate period fonts.

(On current Firefox, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, and iPad systems, the page should appear in its normal beauty, better than the image above. Visual results may be disappointing with older browsers, including IE 6 and Firefox 3.5. The elaborate fonts are clearly readable only on systems with font anti-aliasing.)

"Search, with less evil." - Dude, you've got Yahoo! inside.

Also, it might help if you set the fonts to something a teensy bit more legible, especially on those that are also set to very small lettering. I'd complain about having to whip out my magnifying glass - except with pixels, there's not really anything left to magnify, just some squiggly black blobs.

The search results are from Yahoo, but they've been reordered based on our SiteTruth site ratings.  Click on one of those rating icons under "click for details".  There's more going on behind the scenes.

Those are period fonts, from a type style book from 1890-1900, digitized by the H.P. Lovecraft Society.  You can magnify those fonts on the actual site. Try zooming in on the page in your browser.  (Hold down CNTL, and spin the mouse wheel forward.) I admit that using 10-point Trinigan for text was pushing the limits of legibility. I've increased the size of all Trinigan text by two points.

Should I crank up the font sizes a few points?

If you want your site to be legible before I apply GreaseMonkey rather than after, I think that would be a good idea.

There are a number of "humanist" fonts which should also be period if that's your thing (I refer you to the well-known quote about how much steampunk needs historical accuracy). Tahoma or Verdana might be a good bet here since they have longstanding distribution, but don't forget to set your fallback fonts. They are less ornate, but far more readable, and still "period" to the degree which any digital font can be.
