psst:
"for a quick, but not so purfect fix. You could drill a new hole in the broken suppport piece, and remove the old rivet from the parason body. Then just re-attach the new holed support to the old parason body. If you're looking for something that keeps the full functionality of the parasol, then might I suggest removing the broken support piece, and building a new one to replace it."

I would like to add a suggestion for re-making a spar tab that could be placed between the two rivet flanges. I suggest that you go to the local hobby shop and find a piece of brass tubing that could fit over the broken spar. Then go to the hardware proprietor and find some low-temperature solder (such as that used on plumbing) and a propane or disposable benzene torch.

Slip a short piece the tube over the broken spar and solder it in place. Pinch the tube to make a new spar end, then shape it and drill a hole in it. Rivet the spar back in place between the flanges. You could also, while at the hobby shop, pick up some teeny tiny bolts and nuts, then bolt it back together (though I'd install some washers to prevent loosening the bolt with use).

Cheers!

hmm maybe i could break it further up and graft on a new spoke :/
not sure how well the river would hold up to being picked out though.
that metal stuff doesn't ship overseas.
those teeny tiny nuts and bolts sounds like a good idea too, might solve the rivet problem.

Might be easier to find a scrap umbrella and use a new rib... just look round on a windy day!

Maybe replace the spring mechanism with a steam-piston actuator while you're at it? Wink

It's been over a month since i've been able to read this board, so i apologize that this is hopelessly late input--perhaps you have solved the problem already.

I've repaired several antique parasols with this exact problem. I salvage new ribs from modern umbrellas, as sidecar_jon suggested, remove the old rivet from the pivot point, and replace it with either a new rivet, a teeny nut/bolt, or a twist of wire (depending on what's at hand, what i can dig up, and how quickly it needs fixing).

Hopefully you were able to fix it already! The sun's quite hot mid-July.

Well It's actually been raining over here, but it does mean I  got hold of a broken umbrella. I'll probably wire it temporarily then look for some tiny nuts and bolts.

ha!

When caught in a rainstorm on campus, my brother used to go to the library and ask if they found a "short black umbrella" - voila!  Free umbrella!

The other option, of course, is to get a new brolly, & keep your current one for spares in the future... Smiley
