Good day to you all (or good evening if you are reading this at night!) I am a long time forum lurker who has finally got the courage up to get myself an account and actually post on here. My name is Carrie and I am shortly to be 33 years old and I reside in Lincoln.
Like may people of a steampunkly persuasion I seem to have realised that I am a bit steampunk in retrospect rather than making a concerted effort to contrive to be steampunk. Steampunk for me is not so much about the fictional side of it (although don't get me wrong, I love that!) but it is more about taking the best about the Victorian era; the spirit of progression, tenacity, innovation, discovery, patriotism and indefatecable grit that for me personifies the era and aspiring to it in a modern context.

Hey guys! Newbie here. I'm new to this forum (of course) and I'm kind of new to steampunk. I'm an avid lover of history, my favorite eras are Julio-Claudian Rome, Viking Age, Renaissance and of course the Victorian era. I plan on making a steampunk costume for any steampunk event I might attend and for the Renaissance festival. Right now I am also working on a steampunk vampire series that I'm hoping to get published within the next five years. Nice to meet all of you

Hello hello hello I'm terrible at writing introductions, usually stray quite far from the topic, so I apologise in advance... Hm, um, well, my name is Fi (alright that's not really my name, but you'd all be able to find my address in about a second if I told you my actual name Fi is close enough), and I'm a 20-year-old girl (or I guess a young woman at this point...) from southern Finland. I'm a student of English philology (wasn't my first choice, geography was, but I'm quite happy with this, the literature courses are fantastic). I have really no idea when I got interested in steampunk, as far as I can remember, I've always liked it, since I was a little girl, just never knew what it was called. Quite happy I know that now. I've never been much of a forum goer (to be honest, this is probably the second time ever that I even try), so I'm most likely not going to be a very active poster, but then again, I'm quite happy with just reading and learning and finding out more wonderful stuff about steampunk. Anyway, I think I'll try my best

Salutations ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and others who identify otherwise across the spectrum of gender and sex! The latter to which I belong myself. I'm transgendered (FtM) and gay. I'm also 63, a post-WWII baby boomer. And a late in life college grad (BA history, BS botany, MA theology.) I spent most of my life as a blue collar worker; doing HVAC or as a crew member in the engine rooms of ships, ferries, and tow boats. Including steam. Thus my little tag saying "advocate for the laboring classes" is not simply an affect of my on-line persona. I took the time to read every one of the posts on this thread. Quite impressive, the quality of writing of so many of you young people. Especially you teens. Proof that we who dabble in the past may be helping to establish a positive future. Like many others here, I too, was influenced by Verne and Wells. In addition, as a youngster, I was enchanted by a turn of the century children's book on natural history that had been kept in the family. Its information was fascinating; its illustrations glorious. I have the usual movies and books. The ones I haven't read I plan to soon. I recommend the graphic novel "Arrowsmith: So Smart in Their Fine Uniforms" by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco. Alternate history; set in WWI with a Dragon corps. When I first encountered this stuff I called it retro Sci-Fi. I agree with interpretations of SteamPunk that call it PostModern. Modernity is the belief that rationalism and a totally reductionistic science will reform humanity. But as European historians have said, the Enlightenment died in the trenches of WWI. So then on to PostModernism. Which claims that post Einstein, there is no simple objectivity. That all truth is relative-- to the extreme that every viewpoint is thus valid. Which edges on solipism: there is no reality but mine. However, the SP version is much more hopeful. It rewrites history in order to have a better outcome; a future that isn't merely decay and dissolution. I like to think of it as PastModern.

Hello there Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm a young 20 year old lady from London, and I figured I should probably post here and do the whole formal introduction thing! So um, I'm LabretKitty, and I've always had a keen interest in steampunk. Lately I've finally realised I'm really not too old to run around to identify myself as a steampunk/goth girl with a bit of rock chick and rockabilly thrown in, and it's definitely the happy fantasy world of floating away on an airship as a pirate wench that attracts me to the culture. Oh, that and its such a broad genre, such a fantastic culture to identify with when you're a big day dreaming creative like me So anyway, fellow Londoners, please do get in touch! I'd love to hear from you

Well, it is good to see some fellow punks, and fellow steam. Was beginning to think I was the only one in the world... I might be... Are you real, like, really real? Anyway, Hello! It is good to meet everyone and if anyone thinks it is good to meet me as well. I will let you take it back later.

Good afternoon. My name is Renate. I'm a 25-year old Dutch writer living in Portugal. I'm currently working on my debut novel, which is naturally a steampunk adventure. I've been a re-enactor of the Regency period for years and have always been interested in history so I was introduced to steampunk through films like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Stardust, etc. Also adore pirates, guns and technology so it's a perfect fit. I'm glad to be here and I hope I can find much useful information regarding a suitable agent/publisher for my novel.

Hello.
I am Dan. I am considered, and consider myself, a Steampunk Pirate. because of my dress style. I understand there is much discussion on the subject of whether Pirates are, or can be, Steampunk. But, thats what i am. Not much else to say really. If you want to know something about me, just ask.

Hello everyone, My name is Freya and I'm an artist of sorts My favourite subject matter to draw is Steampunk, it must be something about all those little cogs and gears and brass ornaments! Not to mention some kick-ass weapons. I also occassionally dress up Steampunk for parties, or just for fun. infact all my wardrobe is somewhat influenced by Victorian fashion with a modern twist. Being a retired goth it seems to come naturally.. My goal with creating Steampunk art is to push the boundaries of what Steampunk is and help it to branch out into new sub-genres and styles. These things are alive, always changing and growing. And that's one reason why I'm here- to meet inspiring people and bounce ideas around! -And now for a shameless plug- I am open for commissions so if anyone wants some steampunkery designed let me know! Whether it be for t-shirts, tattoos, posters/prints cards..etc. Here is my website: www.freyahorn.comThanks for having me

hello, my name is Adam. I love the steam-punk look, and will make a good attempt to dress it this year at high school. last year i had the nick-name "goggles" for i wore goggle all the time, because i preferred their practicality to sunglasses since i live in the desert and there is the occasional threat of sandstorm. so i am going to make some steam-punk goggles, iris diaphragm and all. i will post them when they are finished.

Good day to all indeed and especially to you Carrie i'm Nell (well I'm not actually but that's my sobriquet) and I'm not far from Lincoln & nearly 40!!!! Like you i'm sort of discovering that I'm a steqampunk by osmosis- I've always loved steam/traction engines/historical sites, I'm obsessed with the industrial revolution and i like some of the literature.I like sewing/dressmaking and fiddling with other crafts. I'm not too fussed about being 'genre'- I can't live steampunk because I have to be uber-normal in my day job but ooh I do love a chance to dress up and drink tea. An aethership sounds pretty good although I'm quite drawn to the idea of a steam-powered bicycle..... Nell

Greetings all,
My name is Mr. Phikset. Though I am new to your community, I am no stranger to steampunk and the maker mentality. I have a diverse background and a broad skillset ranging from wood, leather, and stone working to metal working and modern composites. I work at a pewter casting facility as a model maker where I make the originals that the metal casting molds are made from. I do a fair amount of prop making and costuming on a budget, so I hope to be a useful addition to fellow makers here.
My current short term goal is to get a basic foundry set up so that I can cast my own brass and bronze parts with eventual long term goals including a fully functioning machine shop.
I love learning new things and techniques and I enjoy sharing what I have learned with others. I grew up in an environment where those around me would quash anyone trying to learn for fear that someone may become better than them as though the techniques used were some great secret. As a result I have learned most of what I have through trial and error and more than a few failures, but even though it may not have worked as well as you hope it would have, so long as you learned something from your experience, it is not truly a failure. I want to encourage others in their endeavors and if anyone has questions I am more than willing to share what I know.
