Well then...where to begin...
Been a professional sculptor/artist for about 15 years, almost embarrassed to say only recently discovered the Steampunk genre/culture....quickly realized Ive been looking for it all along. I very much look forward to what I can get from and give to this outstanding forum.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to dissect some old clocks, photograph curious vintage objects, search for valves and piping, and figure out how to sew leather...oh and watch "The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen" a bit more closely....

Good day, everyone! I am Anilae O'Loughlin, or Kimberly. I am new to steampunk, seeing as how I live in a very small town in southern Indiana. I have always loved dressing nicely whenever possible, and love crafts, especially knitting and spinning. I do not have very much time to put towards researching into things, because I have a part-time but 40 hours most weeks job frying chicken and slicing lunchmeat among other things, own a book store, and am an editor for the publishing house my husband and I own as well. I love cats, and am learning to love tea very quickly. I think that is about all that I have to say. Thank you all!

Hi, I'm Gloria (though Grinnen isn't really my last name). I've been known to ramble, so bear with me here.

'm older than 16 and younger than 24, and I'm (occasionally ashamed to be) American. I tend to be a bit shy, but on whole I'm pretty friendly. I'm very much into art and costuming and literature of most sorts. I've only really gotten into the steampunk culture/subculture/genre/whatever you're calling it, but I suppose I've always been attracted to it subconsciously, looking back. Umm...yeah, I guess you could say I'm a bit crazy, but who really wants to be normal? Anyways, I've been lurking here for a while (the forum in general, not necessarily this board) and I must say I absolutely love all the different personalities I've found here. So, y'know, if you feel like I might be fun to talk to, by all means PM me or something. It'd be nice to know someone, 'cause (like I said up there, ^) I'm really  a very friendly person once you get to know me.

Welcome all, from a fellow newbie.

Gloria, I want to ask this question without sounding the least antagonistic or judgemental.  I have lived all over the world, 2 years in Germany, 2 in Iraq and a year now in Afghanistan and i have traveled even more broadly, throughout Europe and into the Russian Steppe.  I spent 16 months intensly studying other cultures, have decent French and poor Dari and now work closely, day in and day out, with all manner of civilians and NATO officers from all over.

I have often been embarrased by my fellow Americans (come on people, black socks and flip flops, really?) and there is definatly some truth to the "Ugly, Loud American" stereotype, but I have never been embarrased by America or to be American.  So, I am curious what causes you embarrassment, or is there another way to phrase that that comes closer to the truth you mean to say?

I, too, am glad to have found this little spot on the Net, and love its eclectic nature.  So, my welcome, regardless of your answer, remains enthusiastically the same.

Well said sir...my experience mimics yours (although my French is as good as my Farsi, Arabic...all are bad...ha!) and I was curious about the "ashamed to be American". Ive seen much of this world and am intensely proud of my country for all its faults.

I do fear we risk an unwanted discussion on this thread however...anyhow...heartfelt welcome to fellow newbies!

CPT CAVEMAN and Skulptor:

I'm afraid I don't have any better answer for you than what may sound like an excuse, but I am being honest here. I'm not entirely sure were that came from, but in my defense, I was working on something over in Microsoft Word which required thought on word choice. (short version, I was writing an essay at the time.) I do sometimes cross my word choices between two things I might be writing, and my only guess is that this is what happened here. What I probably meant here has something to do with my general thoughts on things like Facebook drama llamas and "Reality" TV (my apologies to any fans). It's not so much being ashamed or even embarrassed so much as that moment when you tilt your head and say "Really? That's what you're going with?" (like black socks and flip flops, to use Cpt Caveman's example.)

So, that's my story (not to be confused with a tall tale), sorry for any confusion and/or varying levels of anger I may have caused, and yes, I am quite proud to be American, despite our flaws.

Hooray for polite curiosity! (Or, "thanks for not biting my head off about it. You have no idea how much I appreciate that.")

No worries at all Gloria...:-)..and I wouldnt dream of biting anyone's head off, that would be most un-gentlemanly ...well, perhaps with a little bit of salt (not that table salt mind you...the Black Hawaiian Volcanic stuff...mmmmm). Oh how I digress...anyhow my sincere apologies if I made you at all uncomfortable, I was just a bit curious. TOTALLY agree about Facebook, Reality TV, etc....(apologies to fans) and see what you mean now...:-)

oh, no problem.  Even if you meant that in a context with which I violently disagree emotionally, biting your head off would be counter-productive to convincing you to my side of an arguement...any topic for that matter.

Trust me, there have been MANY times I have been embarrassed by my fellow citizens, and we as a culture have much to apologize for (pretty much everything to do with pop-culture).  One of the things I most enjoyed in Germany was being able to walk down the strasse with my family and be approached by Germans and asked directions to somewhere in German.  They just assumed, because of how we dressed and carried ourselves that we were German and were amazed when we answered them in American English.  I love being able to blend into and immerse myself in other cultures.  But, for me, those excursions also highlight for me why I still, despite so much to the contrary, believe in American Exceptionalism (not superiority, just exceptionalism).

Anyway, no sense in hijacking the intro thread further.  Glad to have made your acquaintance and I look forward to seeing everyones contributions.

Well if it makes you feel any better we have embarrassing reality T.V. and dubious choices in foot attire here in the UK too. Still one can't condemn a whole country because a few of it's citizens sometimes behave in a way that tends to make one's face and palm involuntarily clash in a frequent and untimely manner.

Personally I'm rather fond of Americans (although I couldn't eat a whole one) and occasionally I even meet a British person that isn't a total git as well. Still welcome to the forum everyone. May we all spend many a happy moment chuckling over our respective cultural idiosyncrasies . Wink

Well said, and I must say I giggled quite a lot at the thought of one eating a whole american!  Cheesy

I share some of Gloria's view, but also some of Cpt Caveman's. I am embarrassed by some of the concoctions people come up with for attire in the US, but not embarrassed to be American. I'm loud and over the top sometimes, but not ever in a disrespectful way - does that make me a Loud American? LOL

Anyone care for an ale?
A man after my own liver. Don't mind if I do.

Greetings to the new arrivals and returnees; as you can see we're a very welcoming community here. And rather lax about closing time.
So pull up a seat, partake of your beverage of choice and have a wander round. Even for the seasoned returnee there are new nooks and crannies to be found. I'm afraid that you will have to show yourselves around though, as Igor is occupied in the basement for the foreseeable future (and occasional parts of the past).

BTW ... I found Igors arm in the rigging.  Shall I send it back via post?  I'll include a bit of duct tape in an effort to keeping it in his person ... I think I had mentioned that a threaded connection would be better than the slip-on.

Here's your ale.
